It’s Jon Robinson’s Annual Birthday Bash at the Latona! @funky_ginger_jon
He’ll be celebrating with Audrey Stangland on trombone and vocals, Sam Jaeger on guitar, and Michael Campbell on drums (and of course, you).
Born in Houston and raised in the great PNW as a pastor’s kid, Jon grew up learning to play bass through gospel music and followed the natural musical pathway into the funk/soul/RNB world. He stumbled into jazz and the upright bass in his first year of college and quickly fell in love with these sounds and rhythms he had never heard before. After earning his Bachelors of Arts in Music from Central Washington University, he played in a collection of bands as a sideman for years until COVID came and shut everything down. The years since then have been very retrospective, thinking of the core reasons why people play and listen to music, which has resulted in this band.
Jon’s quartet honors the people and music that came before that have given us so much, but is presented in a unique format that blends all of Jon’s past inspirations into something you haven’t quite heard before. Happy Birthday to our favorite funky ginger! 🍻

Spending a few days at Bocas Del Toro in Panama. Smoking Cubans on the Caribbean while watching a far off electrical storm. Having fun experimenting with astrophotography, trying to capture the kabillion stars in the sky. When the clouds roll by and cover the stars, it’s a perfect time to grab a kayak paddle and play with the bioluminescent algae in the water right off the deck. What a pure natural wonderland this place is.

The best part about traveling to new places is definitely the people you meet along the way. What started out as a nice guy helping some lost Americans on the bus from David turned into the best part of our trip so far. We met Pablo on the bus who went out of his way to help us find our seats and then he initiated conversation at the lunch stop in Santiago. We added each others instagrams, one thing led to another and we found ourselves meeting up with Pablo and his family at the Boquete fair. I thought we would just get a couple drinks but we collectively hung out all night long. They are such a beautiful family who obviously have so much love for each other and their community. It was an absolute pleasure to spend the evening with them and I look forward to years more of friendship and connection. The family that parties together stays together!!!
@pablito_cpc_samudio I hope you guys all make it to Disneyworld soon!!!!!
Boquete is so cool, this place is an absolute gem. Everyone’s just looking for a reason to celebrate and party, and they do it well! Rum tasting really knocked me out.
Panama knows what’s up!!
Lots of cool things all around, but I have particularly enjoyed meeting the ex-pats and Panamanians who work together to build cool stuff. This is my favorite house I’ve seen perhaps in my whole life. This house was built by my friend Scott. He’s a resilient and dedicated guy who came from San Fransisco some decades ago and has developed harmonious relationships with the locals in Boquete. They’ve worked together to create and test out new and unique building techniques that have been tried and proven through the years. He said after experimenting on everyone else’s house, his personal house is the culmination of everything he’s learned. It is magical and whimsical and I DREAM about having my own space like this one day. Amazing to see such a diverse community that cares for each other and works together for the greater good. Super grateful and humbled by all the fun and kindness present in every corner of this country, I wish I could take it all with me back home.

I know I’ve posted myself playing this song a thousand times BUT… it’s one of my all-time favorite bass lines and I’ll play it until I can’t play bass anymore. I’ve spent dozens of hours over the years working on this same song, yet every time I sit down and put more time into learning the same thing, I’ll always discover something new and find things I could do better than how I was doing it before. The history behind these iconic recordings fill me with life and you can never learn all of it, there’s always someone out there with another relevant story you haven’t heard yet. Music is so cool.
I was just organizing my life and going through old iMovie files and found this video that I have absolutely no recollection of from about three or four years ago. Sounds like I EQ’d out the original bass so I could play along. Listening back to this video I realized I’m feeling incredibly proud of the way I sound, and I’m even more satisfied with the musical progress I’ve made since then. One of the biggest thrills of music for me is not playing, but also learning about the electronics and gear and learning how to carve out your perfect tone. Production is hard, but I’m really pleased with how I sound in this video.
There were some years I didn’t play much and took a bit of a mental health break when music got too intense for me. I have gone on a huge journey of separating my self worth from the things I do, a journey I am still on. But I am so proud of myself that I’m still playing, and am so humbled and grateful for the incredible musicians I get to play with and for the people and local businesses that keep the music scene alive. Music constantly teaches me about all aspects of life and is BY FAR the coolest thing I get to do. Although it’s a bit old, this video felt like a milestone to me that deserved some gratitude.
If you have influence over young people, please do what you can to provide them with opportunities to play music and make art and support them while they grow. Just as importantly, support those who help teach them!
No AI or nuthin fancy here. Just some hot dudes, an iPhone and a smokey sunset.
Had a rejuvenating weekend with some of my OG boys this weekend somewhere out in the middle of the Cascades. Thankful to be able to reconnect with old buds. Still dying over these sunset portraits @tim_krause_tacoma graciously took of the whole group yesterday.
@funky_ginger_jon is back at Latona Pub this weekend! If you’re looking for amazing live music and no cover charge we’re here for you. 🙌 #LiveatLatona #SeattleMusic
