Here's probably one of the most exciting project the cat and I have been up to. It couldn't be more special than given the opportunity to design one of the 8 @diageo Special Release 2023. Each bottles were designed by illustrators around the world, inspired by the tastes and flavour notes of the Whisky and each one of them has a story of its own. Roseisle is a beautiful whisky distilled using Japanese technique made in Roseisle Scotland. The story was "The Kite Maker". More about this Whisky @malts.com_official (Thanks guys!) Thanks to @friarandvesper for the giving me the inspiration for the design. I watched the inside the mind of a cat and learned that scottish distillery traditionally has cats on site to prevent the barly from eaten by mice. That's when I realised, iv seen a cat somewhere I could use. Special thank you to the wonderful team @bloom.london who never gave up on me, always patient and forever encouraging through the journey. These pieces are from @cloud_coven_collective exhibition Lately, I’ve been reflecting on my journey, and this collection was produced from that. At 15, I left Japan to learn English and moved to Devon—where I discovered a second family and met my best friend. I stayed for three years before moving to Scotland to attend art college, and have now lived in Edinburgh for almost 26 years. I wanted to portray the connection between the sea, sky, moon, and sun—elements that symbolically link the places I call home: Japan, where my family lives Devon, where my best friend lives Scotland where I live. When I feel homesick, I look up at the same sky or return to the sea—and in those moments, the distance feels a little smaller. I wanted to include my Japanese origin in these pieces through the use of Japanese sumi ink and charcoal, as well as my own ink made from barley tea from the prefecture where I was born, which my mum brought over when she visited Scotland last summer. Finally I asked my nieces and nephew to write a letter to the sun and the sea. I incorporated their handwriting into the artwork which makes these pieces even more special to me. The cat is a house cat so has never been to my other homes, but he has met my BFF and all my family and he hated them all. Thank you to everyone who came to see the show. Hot Snakes Studio Presents "Cloud Coven Collective" An exhibition by Halcyon Nicoll, Marta Smolinska and Ryoko Tamura @crookedkingfisher martaes_art @funchninja Hal, Marta and Ryo are all very well known in the Edinburgh art scene (notorious perhaps?), though this is the first time they've presented a group show together, and it's shaping up to be excellent! The three are artistically distinct, whilst sharing some of the same illustrative mediums and disciplines, covering everything from cloudscapes and sunsets to angry cats. Plus knowing how prolific they are, this promises to be a big one! How many wonderful artists, designers, and makers are there in Edinburgh and Glasgow? SO. MANY. We have a few of these wonderful people in the pop-up, including @funchninja @hanaberggren and @elsawonderful . Ryo (@funchninja ) is a Japanese artist based in Edinburgh who has a sense of humour and empathy with all the human (and cat) feels that I think is basically among the tippity top. 🐈‍⬛ Hana Berggren is a Glasgow-based artist who does these insane, detailed watercolor illustrations with the tiniest brushes and her medieval-inspired artwork is fantabulous. Elsa is a local Edinburgh bookseller (over at our friends at McNaughtan’s!) who’s made these adorable gilded nipples — each of these supports their journey towards top surgery and spreads the love just a little bit more. A wee bit of chat about Cloud Coven Collective artist @funchninja Come meet us all in person 3rd-5th April hosted by @hotsnakesstudio in the lovely @leithcustomhouse Ryoko Tamura is a Japanese illustrator based in Edinburgh. Her work is often influenced by her Japanese heritage and is also a collaboration of the mixed cultures she has experienced through her love of travelling and everyday life (with her beloved black cat). Having lived in Scotland since 2004, the unique nature of Scottish humour has played a particularly important role in her work. The theme for the next upcoming exhibition @cloud_coven_collective presented by hot @hotsnakesstudio is connection between The sea, the sky, the moon and the sun. All of which connect to my home: -my family in Japan and my best friend in Devon. I'm experimenting with Japanese ink also made an ink out of Japanese barley tea made in my city. (Thanks mum for leaving them) Whenever I feel homesick, I go by the sea and recharge my connections. So it's crazy to think that the cat has never seen the sea.
