“Fulbright life” is not always easy to put into words. At the Commission, we feel incredibly privileged to do the work we do. Each year, we work with a new cohort of grantees—both Slovak and American—and each group brings something different. We learn from them every single time we engage with them, and that is the beauty of this Program. But there are moments when this work feels even more personal. Today, we had the opportunity to come together with our current U.S. grantees and very recent Slovak alumni at our annual Certificate Ceremony. It is always inspiring to hear their Fulbright journeys—the stories, experiences, and challenges that shaped them along the way. We see our grantees changed. They return different—having grown through challenges, new environments, and new perspectives. Every. Single. One. And we are incredibly proud to have been part of their journey. The Annual Certificate Ceremony has become a tradition we truly value. It is a moment to reflect on what has been accomplished, what has been learned, and what will stay with all of us long after the program ends. Another Fulbright Slovakia regional event marking two milestones—the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence 🇺🇸 and the 80th anniversary of @the_fulbright_program . We organized an educational conference focused on AI and Innovation in Education, in cooperation with our FTEA (Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program) alumni and @kaaffupjs in Košice. The event brought together educators to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping learning, digital literacy, and the evolving role of educators in the 21st century. 🎤 Keynote speaker, professor Jeremy Stoddard, a Fulbright Specialist (World Learning) shared thought provoking insights on digital literacy. He highlighted the rapid pace of technological change and raised essential ethical questions—from the environmental and financial costs of AI systems to issues of copyright, data sourcing, and the reproduction of social inequalities in training datasets. As he emphasized, AI is never neutral. 💡 Other speakers added valuable perspectives on innovative teaching, the ethics of artificial intelligence in the classroom, and the importance of self directed learning. 🤝 The day ended with a warm gathering of Fulbright alumni, partners, and friends—connecting past and present generations of Fulbrighters. 🌍 A meaningful share of Fulbright alumni have roots in Eastern Slovakia, while local host institutions consistently demonstrate remarkable openness and generosity—supporting, guiding, and welcoming Fulbrighters as they learn, connect, and experience the country on a deeper, more personal level. Fulbright alumna, ktorá hýbe kultúrou 📖 Dominika Moravčíková je poetka, prozaička a doktorandka muzikológie, ktorej tvorba rezonuje na slovenskej literárnej scéne aj za jej hranicami. Za debutovú zbierku Deti Hamelnu (2020, Skalná ruža) získala ocenenie od Nadácia Tatra banky. O dva roky neskôr vydala prozaický debut Dom pre jeleňa (2022, KK Bagala). Aktuálne prichádza s novou knihou Moment sily (KK Bagala, 2026). Dominika je absolventkou Fulbright Slovak Student Programu počas ktorého sa venovala etnomuzikologickému výskumu hudobného vzdelávania rómskej mládeže a detí. Last week, Fulbright Slovakia welcomed 45 Fulbright English Teaching Assistants from 13 European countries to our capital, Bratislava. 🎉 Under the theme “Bridging the Atlantic: 250 Years of Diplomacy and Shared Prosperity,” we learned, exchanged perspectives, and broadened our horizons while marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence and the 80th anniversary of the Fulbright Program. 🏛️ We opened the seminar with a thought-provoking lecture by Dr. Jonathan Chilcote, Fulbright scholar at @umb_bb , followed by a historical dialogue with Pavol Demeš, former Minister of Foreign Affairs, and historian and Fulbright alum Michal Kšiňan, tracing developments from the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918 to the present day. 🤝 The afternoon turned to America’s evolving role on the global stage. Ambassador Michal Mlynár and Ambassador Ingrid Brocková offered insights into multilateral diplomacy, while Ambassador Radovan Javorčík, Ambassador Miroslav Wlachovsky, and Professor and Fulbright alum Peter Terem led a dynamic discussion on NATO and the transatlantic partnership. 🤖 On the second day, we shifted our focus to American ingenuity, entrepreneurship, and innovation with Peter Rusiňák of @amcham_slovakia and innovation expert Peter Kolesár. With Ivan Srba from the @kinit.sk , we also confronted the challenges of the digital age, including social media and AI. 🗣️ We concluded with a session on public diplomacy led by Elizabeth Blumenthal and Destin Hodges from the @usembassyslovakia , culminating in a collaborative exercise where participants designed outreach initiatives inspired by the #america250 narrative. 💙 Beyond discussions, the seminar created space for storytelling, connection, and creativity—reminding us that the true strength of the Fulbright Program lies in the people it brings together. 🙏 We are grateful for all participants, speakers and partners, who contributed to the success of the seminar. Welcoming Dr. Sarah Mattice to Slovakia 🇺🇸🇸🇰 Dr. Mattice, a Fulbright Specialist from the University of North Florida @uofnorthflorida , is currently visiting the University of Prešov @international_unipo . She is a Professor of Philosophy and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, specializing in comparative and East Asian philosophy. In Prešov, she has been connecting with faculty from the Institute of Philosophy and working with students across Philosophy, Psychology, and Ethics. Through lectures, discussions, and a practicum, she is opening up new perspectives on non-Western philosophical traditions, as well as mindfulness and meditation. Her visit is not only about the classroom, together with her family, she has been exploring local life, from Prešov’s old town to a visit to a children’s café. 📅 Don’t miss her upcoming public lecture on April 15: “Appreciating Chinese Philosophy: Texts and Issues” — exploring the Buddhist Heart Sutra and its Chinese philosophical context. #Fulbright #FulbrightSpecialist #AcademicExchange

Last week, we launched a series of regional events marking two important anniversaries this year—the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the 80th anniversary of @the_fulbright_program . We began in Košice at @upjs_kosice , @upjs_international with an inspiring poetry reading by Fulbright alum Dr. Peter Burzynski, who returned to Slovakia as a Fulbright Specialist. The following day at @umb_bb , current U.S. scholar Dr. Jonathan Chilcote from floridacollege delivered a thoughtful lecture on American history. He offered a compelling perspective on the Declaration of Independence, connecting its legacy to key moments that shaped both the United States and the wider world. His talk resonated strongly with students and led to a lively discussion. We were also pleased to attend the opening of the EMERGE hub at @umb_bb , with Fulbright alumna Prof. Alžbeta Brozmanová Gregorová among its coordinators. The day concluded with a reception at the State Scientific Library, where we gathered with grantees, alumni, partners, and friends. Our thanks go to @americanspacesslovakia for arranging the venue and to the @usembassyslovakia for joining the celebration. Dr. @peter_burzynski also joined us to read some of his poetry, and many of us were especially touched by his short poem written in Slovak, “Chcem tu zostať.” Moments like these are a reminder of the lasting value of international exchange—not only within academic institutions but across entire communities. It is especially rewarding to see our alumni continue to grow, inspire others, and bring a global perspective to their work. We would also like to extend a special thank-you to our longtime partner and friend, Prof. Peter Terem, a distinguished Fulbright and Weiser Fellowship alumnus, whose ongoing support means a great deal to us. On March 24 the Department of British and American Studies [@kaaffupjs ] in cooperation with Fullbright Slovakia [@fulbrightslovakia ] organised a poetry reading by the published author and scholar Dr. Peter Burzyński [@peter_burzynski ]. The event offered students and faculty an opportunity to engage with contemporary poetry and gain insight into the author’s work and academic perspective.
