Whether I’m playing “Back That Azz Up” at a wedding or the national anthem at an @NWSL game, people always have opinions about the music I’m playing 😂🎻
I’m a first-generation immigrant, born in another country, dedicating my life to building a full-time career as a violinist in a city dominated by tech & AI. There’s something poetic to me about performing an instrumental version of the anthem — no lyrics, no words, just melody. 🎻
I hope to make a positive impact by providing representation for minorities & adoptees on the field and in stadiums. Personally, turning down opportunities to perform the anthem has never resonated with me as a form of protest. I’ve volunteered my time producing and performing six nonprofit fundraising concerts, and I believe those efforts create a more meaningful positive impact. 🎻
What’s interesting is that I don’t think this question would be asked if I were a white musician posting excitedly about an upcoming anthem performance. Minorities are often expected to carry the responsibility of turning down hard-earned opportunities as a form of social protest, while white counterparts in the exact same situation usually are not.
A thought experiment: would you ask a white musician this same question, or only a POC musician?
Recently, I saw another musician colleague of mine who is also a POC perform the anthem for the MLB and feel the need to include a disclaimer about being conflicted. I wish we could simply share exciting career highlights without feeling pressure to apologize or explain ourselves in ways white musicians typically are not expected to.
I hope this makes sense. I generally avoid discussing race because, honestly, since moving to San Francisco, I rarely feel like a minority anymore. But in this situation, I think it’s relevant. 🌹
