Andy from RMS Growers will teach you how to inoculate and grow your own mushroom log to bring home and get tips for maintaining healthy, productive mushrooms.
Interested in growing shiitakes, but not the workshop? We will have pre-inoculated logs for sale at our Plant Sale and if you can’t come to the Plant Sale, rest assured, we will be stocking, freshly harvested shiitakes in the Farm Store all summer long!

Cool tree action near the pond! The red horsechesnut is in bloom. It’s a young tree so you can get a great view of the gorgeous flowers that are ordinarily too high to see up close on a mature tree. Also just down the hill from the pond is our Japanese emperor oak ‘Pinnatifida’ which is just starting to leaf out. This native of Eastern Asia has very lacy leaves so keep an eye on them as they grow to full size.

Striped maple trees are an understory tree which grow in the forests from southern Canada to the Appalachian Mountains. As an understory tree they can tolerate full shade and don’t grow very high, up to 30 feet. In spring they produce these delicate inflorescences which are clusters of flowers that hang below the leaves.

Sneak peek! The Holcomb Tree Trail will be offering an America 250 scavenger hunt very soon. We installed the tree labels yesterday and big thanks to Mark Neumann, the chair of the Granby America 250 Committee for making the tags. (He made them at the Cossitt Library Maker Space!) We have labeled the state trees of the original 13 colonies. The scavenger hunt handout is almost complete and we will post it on our website. Look for another IG post when it’s available.

Happy Arbor Day! The Holcomb Tree Trail has been steadily adding new trees to the arboretum at Holcomb Farm. In 2024 we received our Level I certification from ArbNet which is the primary global arboreta community.
