The Festive 500 Challenge at Herne Hill Velodrome invites 10 riders to complete 500km (1,112 laps) in one go at the year’s end. Over five editions so far, participants have raised over £100,000 for charity. For 2025, we would love for half of the riders to be women, so we’re taking a slightly different approach in the application process.
Entries are open early this year, giving you almost a full year to train. We’re offering free coaching to underrepresented riders: a 30-minute 1-1 session with an HHV coach to map out your training and a check-in before the big ride. You don’t need to be an experienced endurance rider—just sign up, share which charity you’ll support, and tell us why you want to take on the challenge.
The ride is tough—500km is a long way—but it’s all on a traffic-free velodrome. No potholes, no traffic lights or cars, no navigation, no bike lights running out. You can even bring a change of clothes, extra food, and take a nap if needed. But keep in mind: after a few hundred kms, the repetitive laps can test your focus!
This challenge evolved from the @rapha festive 500 challenge, and we are grateful to @rapha_london for the support they’ve shown us in each edition of the challenge. If access to winter cycling kit is a barrier to you applying - please don’t let it be! Thanks to Rapha we can help out riders who need a little extra kit for the cold weather.
The first round of entries closes mid-February, so if you’re new to long rides and want to give it a go, apply early to get the most time to prepare. We’ll save a few spots for a second round later in the year. 5 spaces are reserved for women riders, with nonbinary riders allocated across men’s/women’s spaces.
Share with your clubs and with anyone who might be interested in committing to a big charity ride this year :) The link to apply is in our bio.
