A Love Letter to Eugene Architecture & Design 💌: 2 years ago — February 22, 2022 (2/22/22 on a Tuesday!) I officially opened the doors to my shop in this iconic Eugene landmark — The Kennell-Ellis Building!! So grateful that @article.won showed me the listing and, although I wasn’t sure if it was the right time as we were just beginning to move forward from the Pandemic, something about the unique beauty of this building for my 1st brick & mortar spoke to me. Completed in 1947, the Kennell-Ellis building is an awesome example of the Streamline Moderne style of architecture — designed by Eugene Architect Robert Wilmsen who later developed a considerable legacy of Mid-Century Modern architecture throughout Oregon! The Streamline Moderne style emerged during the 1930s and only lasted about 10 years. Influenced by an aerodynamic aesthetic, it emphasized horizontality, curved forms and smooth flowing lines, reminiscent of giant ships of the time. 🚢 The more I looked at the building the more I loved it. It secretly reminded me of the neon-glowing disco roller skating rink in the epic 80s film Xanadu (just humor me here, IYKYK😝 @johannaboots that’s for 🫵🏽.) And I recently read that the bldg in the film — the incredible and now demolished Pan Pacific Auditorium in LA — was also a true example of the brief but iconic period of Streamline Moderne architecture! 🤓🪩🛼 I’m just really happy to call this 13th & Willamette corner home and I love what we’re creating here. Many local families have incredible memories of this building from having their prom and wedding pics taken in the photography studio back in the day. If anyone has info about Morse’s Women’s Boutique or any vintage interior pics please send them my way! While in school and studying with @garthfagandance , Judith Jamison — Ailey Artistic Director at the time, came to Rochester and my love for their company grew. Heavy like a piece of armor, this museum-worthy suit is in exceptional condition for its age and was beautifully preserved and deeply loved by its owner. The burgundy velvet 2-piece suit is an Elizabethan theater reproduction from the early 1900s! Also immaculately kept, both pieces stunning in person. #vintageisalifestyle #freestylesuperette
