Come work with us! We’re so excited to be teaming up with Arraymusic for this year’s Young Composer Workshop!
Arraymusic’s Composers’ Workshop provides mentorship for emerging composers through creative workshopping, composition seminars, and individual lessons.
This year four music creators will be selected to work closely with members of Freesound and Composer Mentors to develop new pieces (or works-in-progress) to be presented publicly in the final stage of the workshop. Upon selection, artists receive intensive twice-weekly rehearsal sessions with Freesound artists and mentors, allowing each participant to try out and refine ideas. Participants are able to book private lessons with Mentors, and Composition Seminars occur weekly with presentations by the participants and Mentors.
The workshop provides an opportunity for composers to work closely with professional musicians, to learn about the instruments in greater detail, and to take the time to experiment with techniques, sounds, timbral combinations and other considerations.

Thanks to Justin Massey for running electronics, and to the Free Concert Series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre for presenting Freesound and Aysel!

He’ll be playing music by Christina Volpini, Linda Carlton Smith, Tristan Perich, and a premiere by @dontstoptilyoufretenough !

We’re super excited to see this concert this weekend in Toronto featuring Lindsay McIntyre!
Vocalist Lindsay McIntyre sings Morton Feldman’s Three Voices - an hour long meditative work for vocalist and two pre-recorded tracks.
“As a vocal artist, I’m constantly trying to push myself, whether that be in range, colour, sound, or some other intangible thing. I’m drawn to this piece because of it’s beauty and what it means to be making music with past self, but also because of the extreme amount of concentration and stamina it requires from the vocalist. Maybe an ego-centric goal, but maybe not at all - at what point in the piece do I disappear and the music takes over?”
This Sunday ad 7:30PM at Arraymusic!
What a month for Freesound! We’re taking stock of the last month of activites, and planning ahead to our next few shows! What a way to kick off the first part of our season!
Photos 1-2 - On September 14, we welcomed Transsonic (Violin Yip & Nicola Hein) to Arrraymusic from Germany. Opening for them was our friend Jason Doell with a collection of pieces for diatonic music boxes.
Photos 3-5 (photos by Mike Tan) - On September 19, our members, Aysel Taghi-Zada, Émilie Fortin, and Wesley Shen went to Calgary to open the season for New Works Calgary with ‘Strophe Rocket’ - a commission from Canadian composer Martin Arnold
Photos 6-7 - Finally, on October 5, we welcome pianist Joseph Houston to Arraymusic. Joseph came in from Berlin to perform a program of experimental music for piano and electronics with music by Linda Catlin Smith, Chiyoko Slavnics, Cassandra Miller, Max Murray, and more!
It was an amazing month of music!
Thank you as always to Arraymusic for having us in residence! And to the donors and funders that make these shows happen - @torontoartscouncil , @socanfdn , and Lorna and Roger Smitj, as well as all our other private donors!
