Some making of steps of the modified Triumph gas tank.
First came a wire buck to design and fit the shell which is welded on top of the original gas tank.
The buck gives accurate patterns for layout and shape.
I started by shrinking around the edges. It takes a while to shrink it to the required shape… also I stretched the high crowned mid section traditionally with a mallet and a leather bag.
Also stretched and preplanished the panel in the powerhammer, planished in the pneumatic hammer and fine tuned it in the wheeler.
9th picture shows the hood panel before trimming. The steering angle openings were cut out and simple rounded pieces welded in.
I fillet welded the piece onto the gas tank, ground it and went over again with a tig brazing seam, which just is nicer to grind… 😃
Leak tested, metalfinished and an additional tank sealer and that was it. 🙌🏾
The complete bike is now at @jacksevenratbikecustoms for patina paint and fancy designs! Cant wait to see it in its final appearance.

#throwbackthursday when I struggled with a slim little stainless steel front fender last year.
It basically started like every fender. Measurements, layout, cut sheet to size and start bashing…
A pretty effective way to shrink the edge is tuck shrinking in the stump.
The harder part was to have the radii tight fitted to the tire. A back and forth between wheeling machine, planishing hammer and a nibbler die set (I never took a photo of).
Another challenge was to create the mid section recess. All hand made with hammers, dollies and a torch to shrink the material. Reason for it is the little space between tire and bridge of the customer’s @tolleengineering fork.
Metalfinished and polished.
Such a cool project, learned a lot!

Doin it for the rock!
Metal shaping in it‘s traditional trade isn’t just a standard craft.
It is an art form!
It’s no easy money, not a fast way to get things done.
This trade will consume days and months and years of your time, if you aim for perfection.
You learn with every new job, cause it’s always different and most likely quite challenging.
On one hand it is rough and harsh, and is as gentle and precise on the other.
I have my idols and you may have yours, but what I know for a fact is that none of them had it easy. Every single one of them put in the hours to go for it, and failed. But didn’t back down!
Having this in mind keeps me pushing and motivated to stay on track to become a better craftsman and artist!

Third part of a BSA M20‘s split gas tank, steel side, which basically shows the welding.
BUT: it’s never just tacking and go for it!
If you fuse sheet metal panels, there’s some fitting, hammering and adjusting involved.
It’s a speed run though.
As with all my gas tanks I „back purge“ the welding sea by taping heat resistant fiber band and aluminum tape to the backside. Keeps air out and argon on and works just fine if you wanna get rid of any risk of leaks in your weld.

This is part 2 of a BSA M20‘s split gas tank.
I didn’t film the rough shaping, but it‘s as always: cut out blank, shrink and stretch the metal with whatever method you like and technique you own.
In this case, most of the shrinking happened with a mallet in a stump, refined with thumbnail shrinking in my Nibbler.
Next up was a rough planishing in the powerhammer followed by - what this video shows - planishing and forming in the English wheel and a pneumatic planishing hammer.
Finished with trimming of the edges after fitting it nice and tight to the wire buck.
