@jamescohangallery See new work by Fred Tomaselli in All About 25, a group exhibition celebrating James Cohan’s 25th anniversary, on view at the gallery’s 52 Walker Street location through July 25, 2025. Please note that our New York galleries will close today, Friday, May 23, at 3 PM for the holiday weekend and reopen on Tuesday, May 27.
Known for his meticulously crafted paintings which explode with mesmerizing, richly detailed patterns, Fred Tomaselli’s maximalist works are oversaturated with conceptual and formal information that generates expansive layers of meaning. In Weed, 2025, Tomaselli draws direct inspiration from his garden, using a photo of an invasive plant as the basis for the background of his composition. Gathered leaves from the artist’s garden create a chimeric floral base layer underneath illustrative invasive plants, vines, pollen and weeds. As overlapping, filigreed vines and tissues connect leaves, and flowers bloom amongst them, a vivid, bountiful garden emerges—a portrait of hybridity, and of nature gone berserk.
