For the new manor house of a 17-acre Scottish estate, Emma @simshilditch recasts regional archetypes in a soft new light. Even in the grand country house, says Sims-Hilditch, “We wanted to ensure that none of the rooms were too formal.” The result? A new-build house that feels gorgeously broken in, with a mix that feels personal, characterful, and not so much as a pinch fussy. Visit the Scottish Highlands in our latest issue—on newsstands now! An Art Deco manse filled with custom work by René Lalique, Max Ingrand, Henri Rapin, and Léon Blanchot—it’s the sort of lavish residence you’d expect to find in Paris or New York or perhaps Miami. But Tokyo? Tokyo indeed. Hidden away in the flush—and very modern—residential district of Shirokanedai, the house only reveals itself, miragelike, after a long walk down a tree-lined avenue. Completed in 1933 and largely unchanged in its current iteration as the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum (@teienartmuseum ), it feels like a place out of time. Artist @barrymcglashan works on nearly 60 small paintings at once out of his studio in Edinburgh, Scotland. “It helps to keep my thinking alive. I find the pieces start to talk to one another,” says the Aberdeen-born painter, who was recently elected to the @royal_scottish_academy , a distinction shared with only 500 of his countrymen over the institution’s 200 years. Since he was a child, McGlashan has been painting from a combination of life and imagination. The imagery in his work might come from recall, or maybe an old photograph. He especially likes the surprise and unfamiliarity that found images offer: “They feel like a memory, but the interesting thing for me is how unreliable that can be, so it frees me up to let things grow,” he says. As our daily lives are transformed bit by bit into a series of zeroes and ones, it’s increasingly imperative to (quite literally) touch grass every once in a while—even if it’s just by dipping into mother nature’s vast material library. Nature proved a nurturing force for the Spring 2026 runway season, with the fashion world looking to the land, sky, and sea for material inspiration. At @institution_official , designer @galib.gassanoff reinterpreted new look silhouettes with skirts woven from rush, while models walked the @balmain runway in dresses covered in ethically sourced shells. While walls have been draped in fabric panels since ancient times, it wasn’t until the early 19th century that the yen for “antique drapery” hit the decorating zeitgeist. Leave it to Renzo Mongiardino to up the ante on an already dramatic design move: drawing inspiration from the Byzantine Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo in Ravenna, Italy, he worked with mosaic artisans to create wall-spanning tile “curtains” for an opulent bathroom in a château near Paris. Outgrowing a house can be painful—unless you’re designer @katejamiesondesign . When the former @voguemagazine editor and her husband welcomed their third child and it became clear they needed more space, they didn’t have to cast a wide net in search of a new roost: They simply moved a few streets away to a 1931 Dutch Colonial on the coast of Connecticut. See how the designer conjured a home for her family that’s equal parts easygoing and elegant in our brand new issue—on newsstands now! Subscribe to FREDERIC today at the link in our bio. Like Christian Dior, artist @sam__baron has always been inspired by flowers—when he was young, he even spoke to them in his own secret language. “Botanical references were the first patterns used in any culture, which links us all,” he observes. That intimate bond has now found expression in his collection of poetic glassware for @diormaison . Read more about Baron's inspiration for the collection in our new issue—on newsstands now! What happens when a decorator with a yen for exuberantly colorful, globe-trotting interiors finds her life partner in an architect with avowedly classical tastes? Nothing short of design magic, if the lifetime’s worth of homes shared by @katieridderinc and @peterpennoyerarchitects are any indication. In our latest issue, the design power duo takes us on a decades-spanning tour of the elegantly eclectic family homes where they have made their own distinctive marks.
