MC-ing the Circle of Honor inductions for @bonefishtarpontrust in Islamorada is an honor itself. And @frederickstivers always adds magic to the moment.
The Bonefish and Tarpon Trust annual dinner and auction is tomorrow evening in Islamorada. This painting will join pieces by Paul Puckett and other artist in the auction. There are several trips, days donated by guides, and some gear available in the auction that is now up online. A great group doing good work for a cause that matters to me and so many others.

“That covey rise was top five of the year… the birds got up, flew high, and then starburst…” and they did. Every one of the birds grabbed their bags and headed for the exit, all in polar opposite trajectories. I imagine them all meeting up on the exact other side of the planet and comparing notes on our shooting. At the time, I had only a handful of Texas morning covey rises to compare that one to, but I knew Bill had seen it all… and if that one made the short list I should do my best to etch it into the blank sheet of my mind.
Now, on the other side of one more season, I can see we are those birds gathered up for a moment and then gone. Thanks to all the folks that made this season one of the top five.
thanks to David Mangum for the portrait.
and sorry for another near miss @jtvanzandt
“Where are you from?”
As a Japanese-American kid growing up in Alabama, Kim Cross got that question a lot. She still does. And, reflecting on her grandmother’s funeral, she’s beginning to contemplate an answer.

Thanks for all the birthday messages yesterday! Turns out there are quite a few of us Christmas birthdays out there… Jesus Christ, Shane MacGowan, Kid Ory, Cab Calloway, Louise Bourgeois, Jimmy Buffett, Humphrey Bogart, and Isaac Newton. It was a fine day on the not-so bitterly cold coast of Carolina with some family and so redfish. I spent a bit of the evening sorting through articles synopsizing all the calculations and theories that landed Christ’s birth on the 25th. Explaining it to my children seemed very much akin to rationalizing why we go off into the marsh, catch something wild, and then return it as unharmed as we can. A great mystery… that I enjoy again and again. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.
The way Santa Claus has that 10-weight tucked under his arm to two-hand retrieve the fly line, I’d say he’s likely a stick. I wonder what his reindeer guide would say…
Thanks, Frederick for allowing me to share this fun piece of art on Christmas. #merrychristmas #islandsanta
