“The day you forget where you came from, you put yourself on a pedestal” — When Jorge Bergoglio became Pope Francis in 2015, the @nytimes asked me to trace his legacy back to the barrios of Buenos Aires, where Father Martín Carrozza (ordained by Bergoglio himself) and his student, Abel Romero, were generous enough to share their stories. Both lived in the Villa 31, a notoriously marginalized neighborhood where priests essentially serve as social workers – inspired by Bergoglio’s passion for helping the needy and hoping to follow in his footsteps.
