Filling myself up with energy and inspiration at @kwppbolts today with @philorch 🥰 We activated @thedeclarationproject here in Philadelphia where it all began, and played together an arrangement of the “first American song” - “My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free” composed in 1759 by Frances Hopkinson, who was a signer of the Declaration of Independence 🇱🇷 Thank you to Ms. Harp and all the KIPP teaching artists who so generously made this possible, and to @fredeka for the arrangement! 🎶🗽❤️

I am overwhelmed with so much joy and gratitude to share this incredible news and project that has been in the making for the past 3 years. Sugar Hill Salon will be performing its first fully commissioned larger chamber work, Praise-Song for the Flying Africans by the incredible singer, composer, and my close friend, Jay Saint Flono. Ever since Jay allowed us to premier a smaller version of this Afro-Baroque piece, we have been working endlessly to bring it to life. This could not have been possible without the help of @citylyricopera and the incredible team that has cared to invest in us in all the ways that make our project feel necessary at this time and cared for. This will be our first Juneteenth inspired concert and what a time to bring this work into reality with the current climate that we are living in now. what is the value of a black life to white america? is it a trendy hashtag? is it the “black friend” you use as a defense when somebody calls you out for being racist? the “rebellious” sexual experience for you to go back to your white friends and brag about? a “mission trip” you are grotesquely unqualified for yet you’ve deluded yourself into thinking the crappy hut you’ve built “au village” saved said “village”? Or the people that make your upbeat hip-hop workout music? the athlete you cheer for yet ignore their opinions on anything else other than sports? is it the one model your brand uses to attract black dollars? (to then use against us donating to say…Trump’s re-election campaign?) is it the ass that you want? the lips that you crave? the hair you are literally DYING to touch? the same hair you deem “unprofessional” in the workplace? the braids you then wear to show off your recent trip to the islands? the minimum wage worker that makes you rich? the prison labor you can profit off of? the MLK quote that makes you feel better about yourself? the black president you told everyone you voted for? the excuse that you have for not getting a job/getting accepted into your dream school? the “test subject” you can use for medical experiments? the picture on your pamphlet to show off how “diverse” and “inclusive” your institution is when in reality there are no black people to be found? the color you don’t claim to “see” and yet a dangerous threat to your existence & safety as a white person? the life you can snuff out in order to illustrate your dominance? <continued in the comments>

i don’t even know where to start lol. last thursday was everything and then some. performing for @anderson._paak and @freenationals was 🤯. I had spent a couple of sleepless nights prior transcribing and arranging the string parts for this show, which were slayyyyddddt by @chiarafasi , @tia.ivonne , @wizclereefa , and myself.
