The project began with the lifeless eye of a dead pigeon, its vacant stare becoming a thread that led me to trace those born without will, worn down by the world, yet still enduring. Metallic gold ink glimmers throughout the pages, echoing the afterimage of hollow eyes—eyes like glass—that quietly seep through the book. Beneath the dust jacket, which unfolds into a full-size poster, halftone images of a human and a pigeon are printed across the front and back covers, facing each other like two reflections from different species. Art Books… Canopy 프랙션의 아트북을 소개합니다. Introducing Art books of Fraction… 『Canopy』는 일본 남부 사쿠라지마를 배경으로, 활화산 아래에서 일상을 이어가는 주민들의 삶과 기억을 기록한 프로젝트다. 개인적인 상실을 겪은 뒤, 분화라는 자연의 변화가 상존하는 환경 속에서도 일상을 단단히 이어가는 마을 사람들의 모습에서 평온과 위로를 느꼈고, 약 1년 뒤 다시 이곳을 찾아 8명의 주민과 이야기를 나누었다. 토모미상, 미치모토상, 쿠도 할아버지를 비롯한 이들의 기억은 직접 겪은 가족의 부재와 겹쳐지며, 상실과 이별 또한 삶을 지탱하는 힘이 될 수 있음을 깨닫게 했다. 이 책은 그들의 목소리를 토대로 구성되었으며, 기억이 타인의 이야기와 교차하고 확장되는 과정을 시각적으로 구성한 그래픽 디자인 작업의 일환이다. Canopy is a bilingual publication that records conversations with residents of Sakurajima, a volcanic peninsula in southern Kyushu, Japan. After experiencing a personal loss, the calm resilience of people living beneath constant volcanic activity became a source of solace. One year later, I returned to speak with eight residents, whose memories resonated with my own sense of absence and revealed how loss too, can become a sustaining energy. The book visualizes the way memories intersect, echo and expand through others’ stories, forming part of a broader graphic design exploration into the layers of memory.
