Can design strengthen society?
In her keynote, Barbara Lersch demonstrates how design can generate and support structures that create impact, foster education, and embed social sustainability. She highlights how design contributes to strengthening democratic processes. Barbara shares concrete examples from her practice, but also highlights methods that can be transferred to other contexts.
What shapes Berlinâs identity as an urban space? How did this identity emerge, where does it stand today, and what future potentials lie ahead? After the fall of the Berlin Wall, as old ideological divides faded, the city became what could be seen as raw âmaterialâ â a landscape of time, space, empty buildings, and a largely hands-off cultural policy. These conditions offered creative communities unprecedented freedom to shape their own environments, lifestyles, and futures.
Featuring speakers who have engaged with Berlinâs evolving physical and cultural fabric across different post-Wall eras from 1990 until today, this panel explores Berlin as an evolving laboratory. Together, they examine how this experimental spirit has historically shaped neighborhoods, defined creative disciplines, established cultural institutions, and forged a distinct Berlin identity that is still a work in progress. The discussion will above all consider how Berlin might now harness its legacy and current material conditions â from the iconic ICC to broader urban contexts â to build a more democratic and inclusive future.
What if design in games wasnât just about playâbut about purpose, process, and people?
In this Masterclass, Simone Kapeller (Head of Design, Ravensburger) invites you on a journey through the evolving role of design in one of Germanyâs most iconic game companies. Youâll discover how Ravensburgerâs design philosophy has shiftedâfrom focusing on mechanics to crafting immersive, sensory-rich experiences that connect disciplines like craftsmanship, engineering, and product innovation.
Through real cases and behind-the-scenes insights, youâll explore how design becomes a driver for transformation: how handcrafted puzzle dies preserve the human touch, how sustainable materials shape the way we play, and how cross-functional collaboration leads to meaningful, tangible products.
This is more than a talk about gamesâitâs an invitation to rethink how design can lead, inspire, and connect. Youâll get hands-on with a creative exercise that brings these ideas to life and experience how playful thinking and material awareness can spark new ways of imagining.
On Friday we look outside of Berlin and take inspiration from Singapore. Jeff Chia will explain how Singapore uses design as a strategic tool for nation-building â from optimising space for multiple purposes to creating an elevated aging experience, to urban transformations that replace concrete with vertical gardens. This talk shows how design can shape policy, connect technology with care, and transform entire ways of living â and what we can take away from Singaporeâs example.
