It’s spring 2006. So almost exactly 20 years ago.
Our booker Claudia called and asked if we could imagine playing the closing set on the Turmbühne at Fusion Festival. We could. A few weeks later, my girlfriend at the time and I drove to Lärz in my old, rattly Saab 900 convertible in British Racing Green. Top down, hair blowing in the wind. Jakob came a day later. Back then, just like now, he liked camping about as much as he liked a split-open gas station sausage with warm Jägermeister. A few friends were already there. But by Saturday the campsite was so packed that we spent ages looking for a halfway decent spot near them. Eventually we found a little patch of woods. Quiet, beautiful, way too good. Exactly the kind of place that, as seasoned festival people, should have made us instantly suspicious. Unfortunately, it didn’t. As it turned out that night, it was the little patch of woods right next to the trance floor and also the substitute toilet area for the overflowing, basically unusable Dixi toilets in the heat. Nice. The sun was blazing. 2006 was probably one of the hottest summers in human history, and we headed over to the Turmbühne. When we got there, Gabriel Ananda was playing. I was completely sober and still got chills immediately. That stage had a force to it that can’t really be explained. The nerves started building. After a far too short night, it was already Sunday. We set up our live set. Jakob on bass, me on keys. I can’t remember ever being that nervous again before a gig. Then, about 45 minutes before we were due to start, everything changed. Suddenly everybody started running. The whole floor emptied out. Completely empty. In the distance, a huge plume of smoke. A trailer had caught fire. The volunteer fire brigade put it out quickly and professionally. And five minutes before our set, the floor was full again. Completely full, and we played like our lives depended on it. Adrenaline is a hell of a drug. We were pretty happy and, accordingly, threw ourselves into the final festival night in a state of full-blown euphoria.
