rly do not enjoy pictures of myself, but I actually love this one. surprisingly love that you can see my uneven skin, which is something I’ve been insecure ab since severe acne in high school (only remedied by a drug that I think gave me hip problems for life?? iykyk!!)
another reason I like it is bc it rly feels like a self portrait of me rn - been feeling like there are parts of me that are unseen & then I get melancholy and feel chronically unknown (enneagram 4w5 - thanks amy you’re my world)
anyway, there’s a lot of times I don’t like my work, and I never like pictures of me, but I took this and I love it & I want to be known bc I’m (unfortunately) a human and not a rock or a tree <3
spending time with Ali in his studio felt like his work - grounded, thoughtful, gentle & unforced. I wanted this to reflect that back.
documenting an artist who creates this way is really special to me. to see how Ali folds memory, imagination & sensation into form - and to step into that with a camera - is really just so cool & such a privilege.

my work is only as meaningful as it is to the people in front of the lens. capturing @stellaadler ’s Arts Justice Division & the Outside/In program was easily one of the most meaningful things I did this year. it’s a unique privilege to hear these stories and incredibly moving to watch the players support each other through their catharsis. a beautiful reminder of why we need to build physical spaces that allow us to move through emotional things together.
