To make them fit, we tweaked the vertical metrics Electric Blue is a rounded pixel typeface born from melting and merging pixels, shaped by Daniël’s visual experiments and Edgar’s variable font wizardry. From ultra-thin to mega-bold. From our foundry @fontspectrum Edgar worked his ass off to get those accents right — not just dropping them in, but making them fit. Their first typeface emerged from a variable font challenge: 36 days of type, by Letterspace.amsterdam – a challenge that invites designers, illustrators and graphic artists alike to create original animated numbers and letters of the Latin alphabet to add to a wider, collaborative online library. As one of the coordinators of the event, Edgar encouraged Daniel to design the number 9. Although they didn’t know it at the time, this small type experiment would later lay the groundwork for their collaborative typeface Purple Haze, a variable font with a “readable regular weight and decorative extremes” now available under their joint foundry Font Spectrum. Since launching in 2021, the experimental type foundry has released two other animated variable fonts alongside purple haze: electric blue – “inspired by the neon glow of the 80s”, and silver coil – “a typeface that can be looped into an infinite rotation”.”

Silver Coil is a variable font that can be looped into an infinite rotation, release at @futurefonts . With this font, #EdgarWalthert flies solo. Inspired by the rotating letters of @daniel_maarleveld , he dug out an old concept developed during the #MultipleMaster era. Silver Coil mixes his expertise from variable font engineering, with knowledge gained by creating animated GIFs. It is a variable font with extremely bold and thin poles and a surprising switch in-between. The look of Electric Blue taps into the nostalgia of retro futuristic design from the Space Age 60’s and Neon Glow 80’s. While it might awake associations to existing typefaces, we can asure you, that these are purely coincidental. The technical challenge to switch from apart elements to conjoined letters, pushed Edgar to the outskirts of variable font engineering. Not every software (looking at you After Effects) might support all features, but we went out of our ways to support as many environments as possible. This update of Purple Haze entails two major changes: We added two scripts to the existing Latin letters. With the generous help of Akaki Razmadze @razmadzekoko we explored the #Georgian script and its round shapes. Irene Vlachou @irene_vlachou helped with the details and characteristics of the #Greek alphabet. Thanks a lot to our intern at the time @romainmarc_ for helping us with this update. Thanks to our studio neighbor @mishosoup for the additional advice. On top of that, we made sure that all dots are in line and order. This benefits users that play with released compound paths. We like citizens of Greece and Georgia to have the same discount price as users of the Latin language had two years ago.
