The final coat is Rubio SheenPlus. Prep is just like regular Monocoat with a 3:1 ratio of Sheenplus to Accelerator. It needs a layer of Monocoat below (according to the website and users); application was the same with a Wypall „muneca“; directly after applying it, the added sheen is very obvious (and a bit much for my taste), but that gets tuned down when wiping off the excess. The result is just slightly more sheen (which I like), not glaring, just a bit of glow. All in all, I‘m convinced! Very easy to apply, fast, durable, great look - pretty cool😎 @maxmonte_guitars @pagelliguitars @obrien_guitars @ryebearguitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @kreher_guitars @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper @wood_n_tones @hub_of_acoustics @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @burmesterguitar @iuliusguitars @theartoflutherie

Now to the neck: again, Rubio like on the body. With a bit of pore filling with ground cinnamon bark (saw that during a French Polishing class at @obrien_guitars ). After the second coat (24 hours after the first) the matte sheen intensifies… I will leave it like that😎 @bashkin_guitars @maxmonte_guitars @pagelliguitars @kreher_guitars @guitarspecialistinc @hub_of_acoustics @sharon.e.proper @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @wood_n_tones @archdale_acoustic_bass @theloothgroup @burmesterguitar @iuliusguitars

There have been a few questions about the Rubio Monocoat finish. Here are some short videos of my process today. I am new to this but have attended the Loothgroup Rubio event (and rewatched). I have to say, it’s almost too easy to be true… Shout out to @theloothgroup for such great content!@archdale_acoustic_bass @maxmonte_guitars @kreher_guitars @pagelliguitars @obrien_guitars @bashkin_guitars @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @tonewoodswitzerland

The finish line is approaching… after all sorts of sanding and scraping tasks the application of Rubio Monocoat is the reward🍀 less than 1 hour for the whole body…wow. I will do a second (and possibly third) coat and maybe the Sheen treatment, but that’ll be it. And already now it has this matte sheen and woody touch… I like it😎 @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @bashkin_guitars @obrien_guitars @ryebearguitars @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper @pagelliguitars @maxmonte_guitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @theloothgroup @iuliusguitars @kreher_guitars

Approaching the finishing stage….. one of the last woodworking steps was gluing black vulcanized fibre around the sound hole, also functioning as a mini-tornavoz. The body was held in the Proper Workstation by @totalvise - I use it more and more, highly recommended 👍🏼 The fibre strip has quite a complicated shape, hence the cursing😬 @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper @bashkin_guitars @obrien_guitars @ryebearguitars @maxmonte_guitars @pagelliguitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @kreher_guitars @wood_n_tones @hub_of_acoustics @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @iuliusguitars

Measurement time: checking different side masses to lower the main top mode. I put the different masses and resulting frequencies into a spreadsheet and that gave me the prediction of using 500g to achieve 180 Hz, my target frequency. It actually gave 179,7 Hz which is exactly between two scale notes😎👍🏼. T(1,1)1 is still at 80,4 Hz, T(1,1)3 has moved up to 226 Hz, again right on the money…. I am still contemplating if I should move the T(1,1)1 to about 85 Hz (enlarging the sound hole)…. Let’s see. - and then something different: the truss rod access cover with magnets🙃 @guitarspecialistinc @bashkin_guitars @obrien_guitars @maxmonte_guitars @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @kreher_guitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @pagelliguitars @ryebearguitars @sharon.e.proper @theloothgroup @iuliusguitars

A few more pics from the neck carving journey…. And continuing with the heel cap: I used the same color scheme as the binding / purfling one. Really looking forward how it will look with the finish (which will be Rubio monocoat oil)🍀 @theloothgroup @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper @maxmonte_guitars @bashkin_guitars @obrien_guitars @pagelliguitars @kreher_guitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @iuliusguitars @totalvise

My capacity to make mistakes always astounds me - but that was to be expected. This time it was the backstrap. I should have known better, having bought and watched Nigel Forster’s course on the lutherie academy… but I made the mistake anyway😬 the ramp for the indian rosewood (and a red veneer) was not good… it ended in a step, so I tried to save it with a small additional ramp. After carving the neck, the form of the backstrap was - well, suboptimal, to say the least😬🙃 nothing to write home about… X-rating guaranteed. The only way out was to scrape half of the backstrap off and put in a filler piece. Then I could plane a better ramp. Phew, one more recovery from a mistake😅 @bashkin_guitars @ryebearguitars @obrien_guitars @maxmonte_guitars @kreher_guitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @pagelliguitars @iuliusguitars @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @theloothgroup @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper @guitarbuilding

Frets! Out of luck I had bought a roll of EVO fretwire when it was still available 🍀 and I go for the rounded ends: typically, they are called „semi-hemispherical“… but to me that sounds a bit weird - „semi“ is Latin, „hemi“ is Greek (as is „sphere“). And why call it half-halfsphere? Fortunately there is a word for that: a quarter!😎 And in Greek that is „tetra“ (same as the number 4). So my suggestion to the guitar community is to call those quarter-sphere fret ends „tetraspherical“… First tool used: diamond coated grinding wheel from @nkforsterguitars (great tool!); then the @stewmac_guitar fret tang nipper (which almost everbody has…and also a great tool!); on to the UnTangler from Max Monterosso (another great tool!) and then polishing with the 3M Jooltool; finally pressing them in with the fractal fret press from JD Edwards (yet another great tool!), available from Stewmac…. Phew😎 @theloothgroup @ryebearguitars @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper @bashkin_guitars @obrien_guitars @maxmonte_guitars @pagelliguitars @kreher_guitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @iuliusguitars @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @martinoquintavalla_liutaio

Fingerboard time… happy to use the @elevatelutherie alignment jig for positioning👍🏼 The two upper neck bolts got capped with veneers to prevent glue oozing onto the threads - also the truss rod groove gets its cover. Then the board is glued on with West systems epoxy. After some preliminary shaping the next task is getting the fingerboard flat; using the deflection gauge from Doug Proper @guitarspecialistinc to straighten the board, it is sanded with the 16“ radius beam and 220 grit sandpaper. Not much sanding needed as I had done so before; then I polished it up to 3000 grit (which might be exaggerating 😎). Looks - well, shiny… @bashkin_guitars @obrien_guitars @maxmonte_guitars @kreher_guitars @iuliusguitars @pagelliguitars @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @archdale_acoustic_bass @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @tonewoodswitzerland @ryebearguitars

On to the headstock: positioning the template and a stop to register the headplate veneer stack; as my truss rod (custom length, low profile, fine adjustment - made by Mark Blanchard) is adjusted from the headstock side I made a drilling jig for the access hole as I don’t want to weaken the transition more than needed… the drill bit is a loong one from Famag; Before drilling I pattern routed the headstock shape and drilled the stepped tuner holes with recesses for the washers😎 @bashkin_guitars @obrien_guitars @pagelliguitars @maxmonte_guitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @kreher_guitars @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @iuliusguitars @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper @theloothgroup @ryebearguitars

Now the rasps come out… I started shaping the heel with skew chisels but felt more comfortable with rasps🙃 I will do the final thickness later. Also: the neck and headplate got their final thickness from the back with a Safe-T-planer (@stewmac_guitar ) - the neck with a linear taper 16-18mm; the last pics show the blending of the transition🍀 @obrien_guitars @bashkin_guitars @g.r.bearguitars @kreher_guitars @archdale_acoustic_bass @maxmonte_guitars @hub_of_acoustics @wood_n_tones @martinoquintavalla_liutaio @iuliusguitars @pagelliguitars @theloothgroup @guitarspecialistinc @sharon.e.proper
