GEORGE had a supercool, fuckin’ loudass gig at @publicrecordsnyc for the stupendous LONGPLAY festival from the genuises at @bangonacan . (are there enough superlatives in this sentence?) After our gig I got to hear Jeff “Tain” Watts with Bob Hurst and Kris Davis! OMG-Tain is a master musician! And speaking of master musician, I followed that up with a mesmerizing set by @prekopcomma And then I got to hear @david.cossin.52 play many, many fast arpeggios for many minutes at a time...DAMN! the mental and physical chops! Hey y’alls! I’m taking care of Bailey for a few days. She is a sweetie unless you are squirrel. The second and final single, Porter (10,000 Men Named George) from GEORGE - Looking for Consonance (OOYH 044) is OUT NOW! Here is more info on this piece: The subtitle comes from an revealing film called 10,000 Black Men Named George, which tells the story of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters — the first Black-led labor union to receive a charter in the American Federation of Labor. Their fight wasn’t just about wages; it was about dignity, recognition, and justice in a system built on racial exploitation. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, thousands of Black men worked as Pullman porters on luxury railroad sleeping cars designed by George Pullman, who founded the Pullman Company and a company town in Chicago. Passengers often called the porters “George” — after George Pullman — regardless of the men’s real names. Many were also called “boy.” This wasn’t harmless. It echoed slavery, when enslaved people were stripped of their names and renamed after enslavers. Pullman porters routinely worked up to 400 hours a month, endured low pay, long shifts, and constant racial humiliation — all while being expected to provide impeccable service. Yet these men organized, resisted, and changed American labor history. Link in our bio to listen, and head to Bandcamp for LP, CD, and digital. Album release date is May 8, but all merch is in stock and shipping early (hot pink vinyl going very fast!). GEORGE is John Hollenbeck, Anna Webber, Chiquita Magic, and Sarah Rossy. @flexatone @akwebber @chiquitamagic @ara_ossy “When the band nails down its unique blend of vintage funk and futuristic electronica GEORGE’s energy is as infectious as a perfect pop tune. “ —Pitchfork Awesome new photos + all album art/design by TJ Huff. #BlackLaborHistory #AntiRacism #PullmanPorters #GEORGECORE #lookingforconsonance

April is Poetry Month — a time to revisit the voices that shape us and the words that stay with us. In 2010, I was contacted by Richard Peek of the University of Rochester Library, who was organizing a centennial exhibition celebrating the poet Kenneth Patchen. He commissioned me to compose music for several of Patchen’s poems. At the time, I was unfamiliar with his work, but I quickly immersed myself in his world, reading deeply and trying to understand the spirit behind the words. Almost instinctively, I reached out to Kurt Elling to see if he might be interested in collaborating. My intuition proved right — not only was he interested, he was already a devoted admirer of Patchen’s poetry. The project remains one of the most unique and demanding creative experiences I have undertaken, and I am forever grateful to Richard for opening the door to Patchen’s remarkable voice. The poem I chose comes from Patchen’s collection of love poems, written for and dedicated to his wife, Miriam. I have lived with this poem for many years. Each time I return to it, I am struck by its tenderness — its fragile, almost unbearable intimacy. One evening, while walking west on 23rd Street as the sun was setting, I noticed for the first time that the street rises as it approaches the Hudson River. It felt as though I were ascending toward the sky. In that quiet moment, the poem — and especially its title — revealed another layer of meaning. The landscape and the words seemed to merge, and the poem began to live in a new way.
