For decades, La Peña Cultural Center has been a place where artists grab the mic and tell their stories. Hip Hop, poetry, music, and movement building. Tonight that spirit continues as we celebrate 9 years of our Empowering Women of Color Open Mic. 💚 And on April 4, we celebrate Oakland storytelling again with a special Freaky Tales anniversary screening + fundraiser supporting La Peña! Throwback to 2006. After this pic was taken George whispered to me: “Fuck Ice and incel wannabe bitchass stormtroopers everywhere”. I said “what’s an incel?” Always ahead of his time and morally on point that Lucas.

I just found out our original song from the Freaky Tales musical finale is not eligible for Oscar consideration due to a flimsy technicality. We didn’t make this thing for awards so I’m not going to complain about it, but I’d like to take a moment to thank everyone who contributed to this killer sequence. Beginning with the songwriters @blimesbrixton & @gifted_gab and producer @elijahgrae for providing the dope beats and lyrics. Bigtime thanks to @chloeandmaud for choreographing (and dancing in!) this magical ride that transported us to an 80s @soulbeattv music video. Shout out to all the dancers who put in the work and made this thing cook. And costume designer @neishea for making them all look so delicious. Thank you to our production designer Patti Podesta and the whole art department for creating this fairy tale sandbox for the cast to play in. Speaking of cast, lets pour some love on @dominiquethorne and @normani for doing the damn thing with heart and soul and dedication. Oh yeah, and can’t forget the legend @beastmode for driving our bus into the cosmos. And why not thank NBA champion @fezzyfel for paying us a visit. Thank you to everyone who made this sequence and this whole freaky movie possible.
