Steak is a cult 90s band primarily known for their song Big Bear, which is featured in the climax of the Fox Searchlight comedy hit Super Troopers. The band was formed in 1992 in Boulder, Colorado by 3 New York natives. Bands like Third Eye Blind, Train and Cake opened for Steak. They played alongside Uncle Tupelo, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fishbone,The Beat Farmers, The Funky Meters, Leo Nocentelli and Zigaboo Modeliste. Matthew Hawkins plays music inspired by driving around and sitting around, and the intricate mundanities in between. With an old soul trapped in present day Maine, they recall the Holy Modal Rounders and folk of the 60s and 70s. Their songs are filled with imagery of the “diners, laundromats, and backseats of cars where you can lament with friends (or at least bum a smoke or a dollar from strangers)”.
