Made up entirely of full-time professional musicians and music educators, this band offers some of the finest of what our region has to offer: from studio players, to pit orchestra players, to middle-school band directors, to wedding band regulars. Playing exclusively original music pulling from the traditions of funk, soul, jazz, and Afrobeat, Battlestar Kalakala packs a mighty powerful punch. At the heart of their sound is tight interplay between two great soloists. The band’s repertoire includes swing standards, traditional European melodies, and the music of Django Reinhardt. @ranger.sciacca 30 minutes before music starts, a $5/person cover charge (excluding children under 12) will be collected. Every year at Finnriver we produce between 100–200 yards of compost to nourish our organic orchard. What begins as food scraps from the cider garden, apple pomace from pressing, and coffee grounds from keeping our team tanked up, is transformed into rich soil for the trees. We also add wood chips, horse manure from a neighbor, spent hop vines at the end of the season, wilted sunflowers when their time has come and gone, and other crop waste gathered from around the farm. There’s something deeply satisfying about watching it all come full circle, from scraps to future fruit. 💃🍑🌶️🍎 Cinco de Cider is tomorrow at Crush Cider Cafe with a Finnriver tap takeover from 12–5pm, Latin music + dance lesson at 6pm, and gorditas by Monarca Grill. We’re bringing a special release Peach Pepper Cyser that’s only on tap in two places: Crush Cider Cafe and our Cider Garden while it lasts. This special semi-sweet cider was just tapped here today and is already going fast. Local, organic stone fruit and hot peppers farmed by @tonnemaker.farm are co-fermented alongside organic Washington apples and locally harvested honey from a beehive cared for by Finnriver’s Orchard Manager, Shay Hohmann. It’s a delightful opportunity to try out your chops and experience music in community, and is open to musicians who know the style. Saturday May 9, 6-8pm WEPA! - Salsa / Son / Latin Jazz 🎶 WEPA! plays danceable Latin Jazz New York style! Featuring Malo Castro, voted twice as “Best Percussionist” at the Kitsap County Music Awards, he adds the Latin clave and spice to music ensembles throughout the Northwest! With authenticity and keen musicality, Malo is comfortable playing in musical settings from rock, to jazz to Latin and Brazilian music. He has created several groups in the area, including Trombanga and Clave con Jazz; and has worked with the prestigious Johnny Conga. Seeing people fall in love with ciders that are farmcrafted to serve the land (and sea) was such a treasure! Big love to all the volunteers, vendors, sippers, and slurpers for showing up for regional shellfish growers, crafters, and our waterways.
