A few years ago, I carved this chair print based on the styles of chairs appearing in Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings. I carved prints based on things I needed at the time and synchronicities I experienced around themes. I carved a witches hut in the woods when I craved deep creative solitude and missed my fire lookout season of life, absurd medieval creatures when all I wanted was to laugh, and the chair when I wanted to sit by a window with my coffee and write in my journal and marvel at the beauty of sunlight hitting new leaves in the spring.
The chair print I named “to rest and dream,” a reference to a line Van Gogh wrote in a letter to his brother Theo. “To rest and dream” is an homage to the romanticization of the ordinary and the paintings ‘Bedroom in Arles’ and ‘Van Gogh’s Chair.’ These paintings show not only what was available for the artist to paint, but also highlight the beauty of the mundane, our homes, and our daily rituals. Van Gogh was a prolific letter writer, and his words are full a deep reverence for the world. He worshipped how the light touched everything around him, depicting the objects in his home with the same reverence as he depicted a sweeping landscape. “There is poetry on all sides.”
This spring I revisited the same image but in a different medium, making it three dimensional, small, and playful.
