As part of the Helsinki Analog Festival, our association and @valokuvamuseo organized the Young Photographer Award 2026. This was the second time the award was held; the first edition took place in 2022 as part of the Helsinki Darkroom Festival program. The Young Photographer Award was established to provide young photographers with a platform to showcase their work and to inspire them to explore the fascinating world of analog photography and darkroom practice. In 2026, the first preserved photograph turns 200 years old. With this special anniversary in mind, we believe it is vital to understand how young people see the world around them and how they depict it through the camera lens. Through the submitted portfolios, we noticed that landscape, self-portraiture, and the relationships between humans, animals, and nature were among the recurring themes. It was wonderful to see how many talented young photographers there are in Finland. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted their applications! One of the aims of the Award is also to give the finalists an opportunity to broaden their artistic practice and expression, and one of the jury criteria was the applicants’ potential for artistic growth. Here is a quick peek at the works of the three finalists. The winner of the Award is Maari Joensuu @maarivanamo with Leevi Kaukonen @kaukonenleevi and Kaisla Talonen @kaislamatil sharing second place. ✨🎉 Pictures: 1-3: Kissa 2, Juhannusruusut, and Hiljainen horisontti by Maari Joensuu 4-6: Nimetön (2026), Olen tuolla jossain (2026), and Viimein (2026) by Leevi Kaukonen 7-9: Nimetön (2021), Nimetön (2025), and Nimetön (2025) by Kaisla Talonen 10: Poster by Hikari Nishida @hikanishida #helsinkianalogfestival

✦ Shia Conlon ✦ is part of Strategy of Gestures / Analog Practice Exhibition at @hippolytegallery 4.4.–3.5.2026 Curated by Clément Beraud @clementberaud & Natalia Kopkina @apartofawhole Shia Conlon @shiaconlon is a writer, artist and community organiser in Helsinki working across photography, film, publishing and sculpture. If your history was an ache 2025 Ceramic, photographic collage; artist’s analogue photography and archival imagery The works in the show are a series of handmade ceramic frames with photographic collages, drawn from LGBTQI+ archives as well as the artist’s own image practice. “If your history was an ache” speaks to a personal reckoning with trans history, confronting how much has been lost due to personal collections being destroyed after death and wider societal negligence and omission. These gaps in history cannot be changed, so what do we do in the meantime? Conlon’s work tries to create webs in the voids, weaving threads from the bodily knowledge of trans ancestors to the present. 📸 1 to 4. If your history was an ache, photographic series 5. ✦ Phoebe Kiely ✦ is part of Strategy of Gestures / Analog Practice Exhibition at @hippolytegallery 4.4.–3.5.2026 Curated by Clément Beraud @clementberaud & Natalia Kopkina @apartofawhole Phoebe Kiely @phoebekiely_ is a UK-based photographic artist who graduated with a BA from Manchester School of Art in 2015. She could see herself in the darkness 2025 silver gelatin prints She Could See Herself in the Darkness began in 2021 as an attempt to locate the self within the frame and to explore queer existence through self-portraiture and images of the artist’s partner. What began as an intimate negotiation of visibility gradually expanded to include domestic spaces, landscapes, and everyday moments, forming a constellation of fragments rather than a single narrative. Across time, the work traces subtle emotional and relational shifts, reflecting queerness as a lived, evolving practice shaped by bodies, relationships, place, and repetition, while holding space for ambiguity, tenderness, and change. 📸 1 to 3. ✦ Clare Samuel ✦ is part of Strategy of Gestures / Analog Practice Exhibition at @hippolytegallery 4.4.–3.5.2026 Curated by Clément Beraud @clementberaud & Natalia Kopkina @apartofawhole Clare Samuel @the_clare_samuel is a visual artist originally from Northern Ireland, now based in Toronto, Canada. She holds a BFA from Toronto Metropolitan University and an MFA from Concordia University. A disturbance in the air 2025 shot on 16mm Kodak film using a Bolex and an ARRI SR2; single-channel video, 4:3, mono “A disturbance in the air” is inspired by Aristotle’s understanding of the nature of light. The work explores the experience of seeing and being seen, particularly from the perspective of gender. From a young age, women are taught to assess their appearance and to attach their worth to it. This can lead to a split internal experience of being both the surveyor and the surveyed. We have all experienced the uncanny dislocation of encountering ourselves duplicated in mirrors or reflective surfaces such as windows or water. Other people have visual access to our faces in ways that we do not, except through materials that interact with light and form the basis of photography. This work centres on reflective surfaces and moving image portraits of femme-coded figures performing small gestures such as adjusting their hair, face, or clothing. The subjects explore their own faces following instructions to “see” them mentally using only the sense of touch. 📸 1 to 6. A disturbance in the air (stills) 7. View of exhibition 8. ✦ Shou-An Chiang ✦ is part of Strategy of Gestures / Analog Practice Exhibition at @hippolytegallery 4.4.–3.5.2026 Curated by Clément Beraud @clementberaud & Natalia Kopkina @apartofawhole Shou-An Chiang @shouanfoto is a Taiwanese multidisciplinary visual artist based in London, whose practice explores the nuanced terrain of relationships and identity through photography, video, performance, installation, and writing. The Unfurling Plantation 2025 silver gelatin prints developed with tea-based developers “This project stems from a profound personal connection to my family’s heritage and my late grandfather’s life on Lala Mountain. He spent years farming there, cultivating a tea plantation on a mountain slope. In his later years, as he battled dementia, he was brought down the mountain for care. During that time, he seemed lost in a fog – struggling, frightened, angry, and confused, often stumbling, until he gradually surrendered, like being endlessly adrift in a dream. After his passing, the tea garden became overgrown, and its commercial value was lost. Only recently, after navigating our grief, my parents and I began to reclaim the garden. This effort is about physical renewal and a way to honour my grandfather’s memory. Simultaneously, I started exploring how this land, steeped in family history, could be transformed into art. We harvest these wild, overgrown tea leaves from the mountain and process them using the simplest methods. I then brew these teas into infusions, meticulously formulating them into photographic developers for black and white film and prints. This hands-on exploration involves rigorous experimentation with various tea varieties and brewing techniques, carefully documenting each developing result. 📸 1,6,7. Process images 2-5. ✦ Hermione Russell ✦ is part of Strategy of Gestures / Analog Practice Exhibition at @hippolytegallery 4.4.–3.5.2026 Curated by Clément Beraud @clementberaud & Natalia Kopkina @apartofawhole Hermione Russell @hermionegracerussell is a London-based photographic artist whose work is rooted in analogue processes and darkroom practice. Drawing on her Anglo-Indian heritage and background in visual anthropology and documentary production, she explores memory, identity, and the fluidity of personal and historical narratives. Working across still and moving image, often with 16mm film, her practice engages early photographic techniques that foreground materiality, chance, and intuitive processes. Immortal Impressions 2025 ambrotypes and chromogenic colour prints Immortal Impressions revisits archival 16mm footage shot in her grandparents’ home, reworking selected frames through analogue processes including darkroom printing, re-photography, and ambrotypes. Through these layered techniques, the series examines how images and memories shift, fragment, and transform over time, reflecting on the intersections of personal and colonial histories and the role of photography in shaping and reinterpreting such narratives. 📸 1 and 2. Ontwikkelbakken (Developing Trays) 2025 chromogenic colour prints In Ontwikkelbakken (Developing Trays), we see prints and test prints being rinsed in developing trays. The series reflects on an archive formed through intuitive compositions and rephotographing. The tray functions as a facilitator for processing, using and reusing images from the archive. ✦ Clara Franke ✦ is part of Strategy of Gestures / Analog Practice Exhibition at @hippolytegallery 4.4.–3.5.2026 Curated by Clément Beraud @clementberaud & Natalia Kopkina @apartofawhole Clara Franke @frankeclara is a fine art and editorial photographer based in Amsterdam. Her work explores myth, femininity, nature, and craftsmanship through a practice that combines photography, ceramics, and film. Working with analog processes and an organic visual language, she develops images that move between documentary, portraiture, and constructed visual narratives. Franke’s projects frequently challenge ideas of female representation and the patriarchal separation between humans and nature, while her practice also functions as a space of healing shaped by her experience with an eating disorder, which has strongly informed her interest in nude imagery. No Hylas but Nymphs - 2025 chromogenic colour prints, ceramic “No Hylas but Nymphs” develops from diaristic moments shared with female friends in natural settings. Referencing classical mythology and John William Waterhouse’s “Hylas and the Nymphs”, the series reinterprets the motif from a female-centered perspective, addressing bodily autonomy, representation, and the relationship between body and landscape through an ecofeminist lens. 📸 1. ✦ Joana Duarte ✦ is part of Strategy of Gestures / Analog Practice Exhibition at @hippolytegallery 4.4.–3.5.2026 Curated by Clément Beraud @clementberaud & Natalia Kopkina @apartofawhole Joana Duarte @joanarted was born in Portugal and is based in the Netherlands. She is currently a master’s student at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen. New Images from the Past - 2024/2026 acrylic boxes; analogue archival photographs; water-based chemical solution “New Images from the Past” is an installation that examines how family photographs shape, distort, and often overwrite lived experience. The work consists of archival family photographs slowly dissolving over the course of the exhibition. As the emulsion erodes, figures blur, colours bleed, and once-familiar scenes collapse into abstraction. Each transformation is unique and unpredictable, turning the act of viewing into a form of witnessing loss in real time. The piece emerges from a broader investigation into the instability of memory and the political power of the family image. Growing up surrounded by photographs that presented an idealised family, one that contradicted lived reality, the artist began to question how images construct narratives that become accepted as truth. 📸 1 and 2.
