Next Monday, 10.11, on the 100th birthday of legendary Welsh actor Richard Burton, @whsteatteriunion celebrates with the first-ever Finnish screening of "Hammersmith Is Out" (1972)!!
The movie is a dark, lowbrow comedy, loosely based on the Faust legend. Hammersmith, a strait-jacketed psychiatric hospital inmate, promises nose-picking Texan Billy Breedlove wealth and fame in exchange for his freedom. Along for the ride joins Billy's own white trash Helen of Troy. Madness and silliness ensue.
'Hammersmith Is Out' marked the 10th film collaboration between superstar acting duo Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Though often regarded as one of their more notorious flops, the film has its supporters. The late, great Roger Ebert even hailed it as one of the year’s best comedies, calling director Peter Ustinov a “peculiar genius.”
Personally, I think it's a delightfully deranged part of Burton's colourful filmography and certainly the kind of wacky film best experienced with friends. As long as they're the kind who don't hate fun! =) Join on Monday, for the first and possibly last chance to see for yourself!
