🌊 From Salcombe’s golden sands to cinema screens around the world 🍿 Much of The Roses, starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, was filmed right here on Devon’s stunning coastline, and it has just been named the highest-grossing UK independent film of 2025, taking £33 million ($45 million) worldwide at the box office. Salcombe, located on the South Devon coast, and named as one of the UK’s most beautiful seaside towns, was chosen for its golden beaches, pastel-coloured houses, winding estuary paths and popular local cafe/restaurant @thewinkingprawn . Director Jay Roach was highly complimentary about his time in Devon. He told the BBC “It’s paradise and everybody is so friendly. The people in Devon were amazing.” And one of the best parts? Local crew were right there helping make it all happen, including Devon Film Logistics @devonfilmlogistics providing location equipment, crew, and even hands-on experience for Plymouth University film students on set. Giuseppe Rossi, owner of DFL said: “It was a joy working with such an accommodating production team. We managed to arrange several hands-on experience places for local crew, including some much valued experience for Plymouth University film students. Beloved British comedy stars Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders have helped open a brand new media production facility in Plymouth - custom-built for audio, video, live-streaming and remote collaboration 🎤🎥🎙️🔊 The studios have been developed as a shared project between Fresh Air Studios and Voiceovers Ltd, both Devon-based. The teams celebrated the official opening of their new Plymouth facility with a ribbon-cutting ceremony by comedy double act French & Saunders, alongside Chair of Devon & Plymouth Chamber of Commerce, Richard Stevens. Paul Philpott, Managing Director of Fresh Air Studios said: “This has been a long-term project, funded independently, with a very simple aim – to build something that supports, not just our own growth objectives, but the creative production sector throughout the South West. This is about giving creatives the infrastructure to deliver at the highest level without having to head to London.” With recent projects including ADR (dialogue production) for episodes of BBC One’s flagship comedy ‘Amandaland’, and Alien:Earth, live global television for GOD TV, ‘French & Saunders Titting About’ for Audible, radio drama for the BBC, and working on audiobooks for Miranda Hart, Monty Halls and Dawn French, the facility is already helping productions around the UK. The new facilities include broadcast-style control rooms for live vision mixing and remote collaboration, a mid-sized studio for television and video podcasts, plus several smaller studios for voiceover, ADR, radio, drama, podcasts and voice-first production work. Frame by frame - Devon filmmaker Simon Tytherleigh has spent countless hours sculpting puppets, building miniature sets and animating in his garden studio, “driven by a story that wouldn’t let me go” 💚 The result is The Legend of Jan Tregeagle - a truly handmade stop motion film, long in the making, bringing one of Cornwall’s most haunting folk tales to life 🎥 The film has also drawn in an impressive team of local talent - including Devon-based VFX artist John Sellings, whose recent credits include Hamnet and Mission Impossible, and Devon singer-songwriter Colin Wilson, who previously co-wrote a musical folk opera on the very same Cornish legend with Phil Beer of Show of Hands. The Devon destination inspired him to create one of Britain’s most loved TV sitcoms; Fawlty Towers - following a stay he had at the now-demolished Gleneagles hotel.
