This mixtape was made during my recent troubles with health, aimlessly scrolling through archives of my recordings led me to find a semi-funny attempt to play guitar recorded on tape in 1997 which I guess is my earliest recording. I started making the mixtape from there, collecting different recordings that even I had forgotten about. For quite some time I also had an idea to finally utilize some spare parts of my cassette collection, so on October 4th during Art Vilnius, you’ll be able to get your hands on a limited edition of recycled C90 cassettes with SPECTIVE MIXTAPE on them.
Set 1 was recorded in Vilnius TV Tower as a part of The Tautological Congress dedicated to the brilliant mind and personality Aditya Mundayam (1983-2019) and my live performance features old cassette recordings of messing around. There are several live recordings in the mixtape, including a bit from of the DOPESMOKER nights, this time jamming with Lee Chapman on guitar and Aleksandrs Aleksandrovs on trumpet. There is also an excerpt from the Never-ending Concert series that started in 2014 at Chomsky bar and would always include live improvisation from the very first opening minute of a bar and close when the venue closes, usually lasting 8-10 hours. The collection of these recordings really spans across more than 25 years of recording sounds and music.

Figūras first introducing tracks were the soundtrack for Kaspars Groševs’ video “on the way to bolderāja” at 2020 exhibiton Blue Lagoon House with Evita Vasiljeva at Cēsis Contemporary Art centre. The video is public now on YouTube. Figūras’ new album Quadrat will be available on all streaming services this week.
Quadrat, latest album by Figūras comes out on 13/03 with the presentation at 1983, Vagonu iela 21. Pre-order link in bio!
Created in different circumstances between 2019 and 2024, the new album “Quadrat” by the artist and curator Kaspars Groševs’ project “Figures” embodies the creative processes of the artist’s daily life between his activities as a painter, running Gallery 427, teaching, writing and creating and DJ-ing music, which has been present in Groševs’ work since the late 1990s. The track “deepoacean”, which appears on the album in both a Ritunsiic rework and a muuzis remix, uses samples from Groševs’ early electronic music recordings, preserved on cassettes. The use of limited sound sources can also be heard in the remix of Irish artist Vivienne Griffin’s unreleased “The Great Unnow”, which uses a sample from the original composition that is only a few seconds long and turns it into a hypnotically atmospheric dub. “Zhilet” and “Nyeve” were created on an old iPhone SE while being bored in a Kiev Airbnb on the eve of 2020. The album’s two opening tracks became the soundtrack for Kaspars Groševs’ video work “on the way to bolderāja...” for the 2022 exhibition Blue Bay House, created in collaboration with sculptor Evita Vasiljeva. The video’s title track was created in a jam session with Bobijs Velns, also known as a member of the Bēdu Brāļi and Kasetes.
