Had the pleasure of finally meeting Arthur and Robert in Hong Kong, at Kung Fu Corner of Kowloon Park no less. We spent several hours cross sharing our principles with each other. Arthur was kind enough to discuss in depth his Chow Gar fundamentals and I must say I’ve never felt anything like his structure before. The best I can describe it is touching heavy, dense iron ore wrapped in cotton and silk; high spring tension coiled softly into the smallest of micro-movements. It is a strength both awing and inspiring. I had the best time and can’t wait to visit these gentlemen again. #gungfu #kungfu #martialarts #boxing #muaythai #kickboxing #jooklum #hakka #chowgar #southernprayingmantiskungfu #mma #traditionalchinesemartialarts #wingchun #taichi #longfist #mizong #tantui #baji #hunggar #wushu #taichi #taichichuan #brucelee #kata #taolu #karatedo #karate #gojuryu #gojuryukarate

三步箭 Sam Bo Gin (Three Step Arrow): People confuse forms (taolu or “kata” in Japanese) for a lot of things, but there’s ingenuity in how the ancients and ancestors developed exercises you can do on your own when equipment is scarce or wholly unavailable. Did multiple sets of Sam Bo Gin’s “three power strike” on each side as a finisher to my strength and conditioning. Note: Sometimes this sequence is practiced where there is a pause after the natural recoil from the bil jee (finger thrusts), to be followed by the third strike. I practice it that way too, but not as a part of my finisher set where I want to push the tan ging (springing energy) quick twitch muscles. #gungfu #kungfu #martialarts #boxing #muaythai #kickboxing #volam #jooklum #hakka #southernprayingmantiskungfu #mma #traditionalchinesemartialarts #wingchun #taichi #longfist #mizong #tantui #baji #hunggar #wushu #taichi #taichichuan #brucelee #kata #taolu #karatedo #karate #gojuryu #gojuryukarate

For AAPI month, I had the privilege to perform and publicly debut for the first time in NYC at the 6th Annual Dragon/Lion exhibition sponsored by The New York Fatt Keung Sports Association (NYFK) and The The New York Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club (CFMAC). Thank you to Fong’s Hung Gar for letting me participate as a part of their Pai’s set. It was a lot of fun and a great time with my friends, family, and the local martial arts community. And shoutout to @thethoroughloops — dope jacket for both performances and street wear! #gungfu #kungfu #martialarts #boxing #muaythai #kickboxing #volam #jooklum #hakka #southernprayingmantiskungfu #mma #traditionalchinesemartialarts #wingchun #taichi #longfist #mizong #tantui #baji #hunggar #wushu #taichi #taichichuan #brucelee #kata #taolu #karatedo #karate #gojuryu #gojuryukarate

A snapshot over the last month’s classes where we applied a pedagogical framework to slowly develop attributes and sharpen technique delivery and intensity over time. Outcomes: Learning the “Three Hands” across four Jook Lum systems, and delivery of higher velocity, cleaner strikes to defend against.

刁國昌 Dieu Kwok Cheung Sifu This past fall, I had the privilege of meeting Dieu Sifu, a prominent Hong Kong Jook Lum Southern Praying Mantis teacher. We met at a Hakka restaurant with a small group of respected Sifu, where we discussed the history of Southern Praying Mantis, the core tenets of Jook Lum, and its evolution. Afterward, I was invited to his home to train and was generously shown foundational material to bring back with me for continued practice in the United States. Dieu Sifu and the Hong Kong Jook Lum community were gracious, honest, and generous with their feedback, clearly sharing what I should focus on to continue developing my Jook Lum. Though our branches have differences, Dieu Sifu and his Pai emphasized that we are ultimately one family. With that understanding, they openly shared pointers and fundamentals to train until we meet again. I am deeply grateful and humbled by the experience. Hong Kong Jook Lum under Dieu Sifu is explosive, springy, dynamic, and rooted in softness under tension. I will continue to incorporate their teachings into my daily practice. Thank you @cyrus.hungga Sifu for the introduction and for building this relationship. Your commitment to expanding the Traditional Chinese Martial Arts community and deepening its practice is truly inspiring and invaluable.
