Pt 9
Ng Ying Choi, a fierce and intense man who values morality and perfection. He started training in 1973 and quickly rose up through the ranks to become one of the most powerful practitioners, renown for his powerful bridge, hei gong and iron shirt. I’ve hit him with a full powered hammer fist only to see my hand bounce off like a drum.
I’ve had the honor to meet and study under him. He taught me to think critically and ask “Why?” It drives down to the core of how the practice is shaped and how the results and goals are achieved. Before him I only had tools but he taught me not only how to use the tools but how they are made and their design. Form and function go hand in hand.
For the first time I started to slowly understand what Chow Ga Tong Long is about. The strength, the power, the breath, everything.
On top of this, Sifu is a demanding teacher. Just practicing is not acceptable. PERFECT practice makes perfect. We must push ourselves to do our very best. And not only with our Kungfu but in our everyday lives. Sifu’s biggest emphasis is learning and living kind, respectable, and righteous lives so that we are able to go out and help others in the world.
In 1987, he gathered with some of his Kungfu brothers and opened up the Mongkok school (Ying Jeung Wui), a school in Shatin, and eventually his own club in Causeway Bay, always continuing to promote the system.
Despite his advanced age (he’ll be 88), he’s as vibrant as ever and not to mention still as strong as an ox. He’s a true inspiration to me in my journey to continue to seek the higher “truth”, to ask questions, to be the best person and martial artist I can be. I’m forever thankful. 🙏

Pt 8
Li Tin Loi SiSook started his Chow Ga Mantis journey in the later 70s and hasn’t looked back since. He’s strict, devoted, and fierce with his training and teaching. His movements and power are no different and is still lightning fast. I was surprised when he grabbed me, his grip strength rivals that of any grappler out there.
I was very flattered meeting him the first time when he said he knew me from my YouTube videos. Under the strict, militant exterior is an extremely kind man. We’ve gone to yumcha several times and he was even generous to give me adjustments and tips. He works tirelessly and thanklessly to promote our system all throughout HK and China, diving into history, connecting with the community, and working with the government to build more programs.
When I was younger, watching him perform Bic San Kuen at Kungfu Corner was amazing. I was in awe of his speed and how he floated across the ground. He serves as a constant inspiration to me, not just Kungfu wise but as a human. He’s extremely gracious, humble, and selfless, and his wonderful students are a testament to his legacy.
Arthur • Evo: I’ve been fortunate throughout my martial arts journey to continuously find friendship and family-hood with highly skilled practitioners of various arts, and training with @evosbasics has been no different.
Through his generosity I’ve come to better understand the shared principles between our arts as he’s coached me into refining my own practice while developing new skills and fundamentals. More importantly, through it all it’s deepened our friendship.
While I’ve only sampled less than a drop of his Chow Gar, I can state with confidence that through it, Arthur has developed himself into one of the strongest, skilled, and highly internally powered humans I have ever met. Hit him up at @evosbasics if you’re curious about it yourself!

I haven’t had the opportunity to post as much and over the next several weeks I’ll be recapping more of my martial journeys from 2025—stay tuned!
Power training/ fajing / faat king pt2
So building off the last video that covered the basic movement pattern, we start to introduce other techniques. The exercise is to help build and generate more explosiveness within your movements and body mechanics. So in theory we can apply this concept to many techniques and combinations. In this case, I chose 3 to link together. Later forms in the system start to build more speedy power / jut ging and exercises like this are no different.
And as you progress through the system your power will also change and this will ripple across the forms and exercises that you do. So training Chow Ga Mantis may seem repetitive but everything is always changing and adjusting to your body and skill. It’s like constantly getting software upgrades. This helps to keep your power lively, springy, and explosive as we’re always dialing in on our mechanics.
Pt 7.
Ip Pak Kuen/ Ip Chee Keung. The eldest son of Ip Shui and current head of the Chow Ga Mantis system. Jeung Mun 掌門, like the rest of his siblings were born into a martial arts family, with his father teaching and uncle and students training. Since the Ip home was the school there was no choice but to see, hear, and absorb the Kungfu. From his efforts, Jeung Mun was able to share and teach people all over the world from England to Australia. He seemed intimidating when I first met him and though he is definitely serious about the craft, he loves to joke around. And once you’re through his exterior shell, he’s quite kind. His students (from Hungary) and him helped chase down a bus for me as I was on the way to the airport! I admire that he still loves to train with his students and he has wonderful explosive speed and incredible endurance. He definitely serves as an inspiration to keep on training and to not be complacent for all Chow Ga Mantis folks around the world.
Absorbing the power of my ancestors…baatsik in the Luk family house in Sunwui, China. There is something romantic about old, Chinese brick homes.

Power training / fajing / fat ging
Many different styles of Chinese martial arts have a version of this to practice relaxed and explosive power. There is a tendency for people to become overly stiff and a practice like this allows one to flow and move freely while also developing power. This exercise has been in Chow Ga Mantis curriculum for many decades and it was one of the earliest exercises I was taught when I started as a young teen.
On a superficial level it works your muscles and tendons while you continuously move. The lactic acid will collect and the burn starts to set in. But that’s just the beginning, because that’s the signifier to push yourself to fire out the arms as quickly and powerfully as possible. Not only that, you also bring the hands inward with the same intensity. So you get to develop front and back energies. As you progress in the system, like many things, you start to apply more layers of detail and intricacies to make a simple exercise a very complex one.
This one is a staple and I still continue to practice this after all these years.
