We design for the future.
At Field Studio, our work is about understanding the legacy of a landscape, and how it can optimally provide for people and wildlife for decades to come.

Landscape architects are the presenters, educators, and modelers for how the built environment connects to ecological and environmental systems.
According to Stephen Ellsperman, @fieldstudiola ’s Director of Ecological Planning & Design, as the profession progresses, so does ecological awareness across private and public stakeholder sectors.
This means that as the landscape architecture profession grows, so does support for projects that center the natural world, resulting in resilient, long lasting, and life-supporting design environments all around the globe 🌿

A place designed for well-being:
This is a 52-foot labyrinth of reclaimed stone and creeping thyme, open to anyone walking the Gallagator Trail in downtown Bozeman.
The Labyrinth was spearheaded by Bozeman Public Library supporter, David Kingman, in honor of his late wife who took comfort in walking labyrinths during her battle with cancer.
The labyrinth is comprised of reclaimed granite cobble and Montana sandstone, while native plantings and landforms create privacy for labyrinth walkers beneath the Lindley Park hillside and the Bridger Range beyond.
We consider ourselves lucky to work on projects that strengthen community and offer access to everyday well-being and beauty 🌿
May 2nd, World Labyrinth Day is coming up! If you’re local, we invite you to take a stroll through the Bozeman Public Library sculpture garden for a mindful journey through the labyrinth 🌀

It’s career discovery week over at @nationasla ’s World Landscape Architecture Month, and we’ve interviewed Ania, one of our wonderful designers here at @fieldstudiola about her professional journey:
Q: How did you find Landscape Architecture (LA) as a career path?
Ania: I discovered LA while researching careers in design for a high school capstone project. Immediately I knew it was what I wanted to do!
Q: What did your pathway look like?
Ania: My pathway began at Cornell, where I took an introductory course my freshman year and immediately transferred into the major. I had so many favorite experiences throughout my studies, including the opportunity to utilize a research grant to travel to Kampinos National Park outside Warsaw, Poland, sketching my way through Italy at a summer abroad program, working a summer internship in Southern California at a small residential firm, and my final studio project where I designed an ultra-marathon route through several ski hills around upstate New York.
Q: Any mentors who influenced your path?
Ania: My former professor Valerie Aymer encouraged me to sketch more, think boldly, and ground my designs in reason. Now, I’m lucky to work among a team of remarkable designers at Field Studio who all mentor me and constantly challenge me to be a better designer!
Q: What was your first year as a professional designer like?
Ania: Difficult but extremely exciting and rewarding. Seeing designs translate from thought, to sketch, to a plan, to a real physical space is every design student’s dream - a dream I didn’t think I’d get to experience so early in my career. At first, it was challenging for me to translate and apply all the big picture design and theory I was taught to real properties and real clients.
Q: Any advice for designers early on their path?
Ania: Take advantage of the time and ability school gives you to use your imagination and come up with bold and ridiculous designs. But remember to practice thinking critically about how these spaces will get built! And don’t be scared to ask a thousand questions along the way!

This is Landscape Architecture in action:
For every project, our team is “boots on the ground,” collaborating with individuals from several different industries.
We conduct site analysis, assess the ecological story of a site, and gather as much information as possible from the land, and from our clients and colleagues in adjacent industries.
When back in the studio, we research, draft, assemble, and revise until we have a design that executes our client’s vision AND pushes the box.
This is what we love about being Landscape Architects.
Our work is dynamic, intentional, creative, and no day is the same.

It’s World Landscape Architecture month, and this week we are proudly highlighting a community-focused project set in the urban core of Missoula, MT:
The downtown section of the Clark Fork River is a well-loved natural space and recreational hot spot for kayakers, river surfers, tube enthusiasts, and walking-path goers. 🚣🏽‍♀️🏄🏾‍♀️🏊
Unfortunately, the Clark Fork is SO well loved that in the mid-2010s, signs of significant erosion from heavy public use began to appear.
We have been working closely with Trout Unlimited, the City of Missoula, and Montana Fish Wildlife & Parks to develop schematic plans that restore adjacent waterways and native plant species, develop a variety of key access sites (new surf wave anyone? đź‘€), and accommodate a variety of user groups.

Happy Belated Professional Landscape Architects Day 🌿
Yesterday we celebrated our wonderful team AND the individuals and firms all over the world who shape dynamic, resilient, and thoughtful environments for communities, families, and wildlife.
Behind every inspiring space is a licensed Landscape Architect — uniquely trained at the intersection of science, engineering, and aesthetics.

When a ranch spans thousands of acres, the master plan has to think like the land does.
We map waterways, wildlife movement, roads, native habitats all at once.
On properties this size, understanding the land comes first.
