Veering slightly “off brand” but certainly not “off personality” for this post ~ September 2005. I was a first-year grad student studying photography when I got the chance to capture a small Seattle band at the
@blackcatdc in DC. The band was
@minusthebear , and they’d just released their second album, “Menos el Oso.”
I was a die-hard film photographer back then, skeptical that digital would ever matter in my work. But that night, I showed up with a Nikon D70 and fired off my flash with reckless abandon. (So sorry, lads!) Although, check the last photo; not one person holding a cell phone in the audience. *gasp*
Minus the Bear’s music became the soundtrack to my 20s, 30s, and I’ll be damned - now my 40s. Their tunes blasted from my car speakers as I drove to photo gigs. Their music filled the darkroom during endless printing sessions. It was blasted over the bar speakers during my post-grad-school shifts. While grading my college students’ work, I’ve hummed their tunes softly. I spent countless unforgettable nights with the people I love most, jamming out to their songs. It’s funny how a single song can unlock a moment in your life; even more so, how a single album can unlock an entire chapter.
Tonight is the final show of their “Menos el Oso” 20th Anniversary Tour. Against all odds, these digital files survived two decades of file migration and never saw the “light of day”. So here they are, posted as a small thank-you to
@minusthebear for the music, the memories, and the moments.
Break a leg tonight, guys. We’re sending a virtual “bouquet of dogwood flowers” for the final curtain call, all the way from Bermuda -
