Last day! I tried to hit up two museums but only had the energy for three.
1-2) Currency Museum
3-9) Pharmacy Museum: Chinese pharmacy, plague doctor(?), phylactery (with magic inscription for divine protection against diseases), balsamarium (vase-shaped bird with a woman’s head), relics of saints, bowl and pestle
10-12) Having seen many churches and cathedrals, the Church of St. Dominic is a favorite; it has survived a fire and was left as is
13) Conna Haraway at Galeria Zé dos Bois
Day 7 & 8
1) I wanted to see the cityscape of Lisbon from high up but the Neo-Gothic Santa Justa Lift was temporarily closed
2-3) Luvaria Ulisses has been open since 1925 ✨ I got professionally fitted and now have a pair of leather gloves that actually fit without any extra length in the fingers
4-7) Decided to give Michelin starred restaurants another try. Beetroot (varying textures of beet, pine nut milk, mustard seeds), smoked eel dumplings inspired by their HK restaurant, smoked white chocolate Iberico ham ice cream sandwiches (made with acorn cookies) topped with chicharrón 🐷
8-9) Got a tarot reading on the steps of Basilica of Our Lady of the Martyrs 🔮
10) Desperate for hot sauce and my hotel had chili oil
11-12) Casa das Velas Loreto, a family-run candle store open since 1789, was beyond gorgeous! No photos allowed but it was nice to be in a space where it was calm and I wasn’t dodging selfie sticks 🕯️
13-16) Pops of yellow, a funicular, graffiti, and tiles 💛
Day 7: After the puppet museum, I made my way to my hotel in Chiado, a super touristy area.
1-2) Last look at Santos
3-7) Wandering around Chiado
8) I saw cabbage tableware everywhere! Wish I had time to visit the ceramics museum so I could learn some history on Portuguese pottery
9 -17) Picked this hotel almost purely on vibes
18) Finished my Sophie scarf on the last day of my on-site! I very much need to block it and fix a dropped stitch but it’s done! 🥐
Day 7: I was originally staying in the Santos neighborhood where there is a puppet museum that I walked by every day. @theblackandthered sent me some photos of her visit to the museum that piqued my interest. So glad that I went and they even had some characters and props from stop animation films!
More from day 2 & 3! Days 4-6 will be lost to time since I spent it working.
1-2) Mummies and more from the Chapel of Bones. “Non moriar sed vivam.”
3) Port waiting for me in my hotel room
4) matcha cat
5) I swear I’ve seen the sock duo before
6) Why is there headless doll decor at the chocolate cake cafe?
7) Eating cake and knitting in the hotel’s rooftop library
8) It looks like San Francisco until you spot 90 Foot Jesus
9) I love all the colors here
10) @fruitofthelump
11-12) grilled salad & candles @skizzolisboa
13) DUCK
Day 2: Still jet lagged and thought I had lost my passport. 😭 I did the classic “lemme tuck it somewhere so safe that I forgot about this hidden pocket.” Took a lot of photos, as you do, and here are some highlights ⚡️
1) The only cat I’ve seen; it was meowing to be let in
2-5) Igreja e Mosteiro de São Francisco (Church of St. Francis) is Évora’s Gothic-ish (with some Manueline influences) church. Our joke was that we would get so much body doubling done if we had our own table of the Brotherhood of the Third Order of Penitence of Saint Francis
6) Lots of fat pigeons about
7-10) Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) has its walls decorated in skulls and bones. Franciscan friars exhumed the remains of around 5,000 people — those who buried in Évora’s medieval cemeteries — to decorate its walls
11) non-alcoholic old fashioned
12) carabineiro, with nam jim garum butter and a brioche (pretty much a hot dog bun)
13) char siu(!!!) octopus w/ macadamia sauce and a cucumber salad with kelp pickle (had the same flavorings as a Chinese cucumber salad but they skinned the cucumber)
14) suya beef tartare with horseradish, tomato chutney, and roti was probably the best dish we’ve eaten so far
Not pictured: the hundreds of nativity scenes we looked at
🌊 Scenes from @macro.waves studio/gallery/fabrication lab — a closer look at their practice and projects, featured as part of the @seedartistseries co-directed by Katya and Tana✨
It was incredibly fun to see @vicwomg perform on the midi steel he created during his residency at @_up_stream !
Songs are 1) a cover of “Sleepwalk” and 2) “Dirge for a Dead Beetle.” The vintage synthesizer guitar is a Suzuki Unisynth XG-1. 🎸
@tiat.place ’s 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯, 𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯 exhibition “[examines] how algorithms, interfaces, and prediction systems take on becoming oracles, altars, and confessionals. Featuring machines that listen, predict, confess, and respond, robotic rituals, oracles, haunted interfaces, and systems that only work if you believe in them.”
1-2) The Gateway by @ok_design_sf
3-4) Pray.img by @wakeupstefani
5) Screen Devotion by @nocellcoverage
6) as the deer thirsts for water by @isorhythmics
7-8) Chromebook Studies #9: On Psychosis by @c_robo_
9) TempleOS by Terry Davis
