No Reason to Smile
The skeleton for ‘No Reason to Smile’ was written in 2018, and is now gathering dust in some lost folder. 8 years later the meaning of the song unfortunately changed.
When it was originally written, it was about the helplessness of being away from my parents in Portugal, while my mum was sick. I was new to Manchester, in search of a better life abroad with the struggles that entails, unaware of what the outcome of the illness would be.
Picking this song back up meant that it was now about loss. In the end, I’m left with a plea for forgiveness as I carry the guilt of a regretful neglect, and a resentment towards a God that either doesn’t exist, or brought no healing, no hope, no salvation.
The music itself explores the chimera of genres that influences Feign, from Death Metal inspired Hardcore, Sludge HM-2 laden riffs, the groove of Nu Metal breakdowns into a Post-Black Metal finale.

Vile Torment
Originally written as a more standard verse chorus verse song, we wanted to capture the chaos and desperation in the cycle of abuse. The choice to remove 80% of the lyrics was to reflect how victims often feel as though they physically cannot speak out against their abuser(s).
As we all know abuse comes in many forms and can happen to anyone. Any age, any gender, any race, any species. If only the world wasn't so wicked.
Feign has always been a very honest, on the nose and personal project with themes often pulled from our personal lives and lived experiences resulting in songs that truly come from our hearts.
Confusion, despair, helplessness. The will to carry on. To what end?

Silence is Complicity
More than a song about the depravity of sexual harassment, 'Silence is Complicity' highlights the inertia of people, mostly men, to call out their peers on their inappropriate behaviour towards others.
It urges people to hold others accountable when they seem unable to do so themselves and in doing so, ensuring that those around them feel safe, which is the bare minimum. Simultaneously, there's a call to action for those who engage in said behaviours to recognise the wrongdoing in their actions and seeking help to stop.
Sonically, it's the most straight forward of the 3 songs in 'To what end', with the intent of being hard-hitting, matching the anger and disgust that the subject inspires.
A big thank you to my partner Jess for giving me the prompt to write this song. There's a sad irony in this, and I must admit that in my privileged existence as a male, I probably wouldn't have thought to write this song myself.
