In Athens’ Exarcheia district, architect @federicascalise__ has reconfigured a 1960s apartment into a calm, light-filled home.
The design introduces a new axis connecting the apartment’s façades, allowing sunlight to move freely throughout the space. The layout divides the flat into two zones: a private wing with a sleeping-only bedroom and bathrooms, and an open living area.

Once dark and disjointed this 42sqm/452sqft ground-floor apartment in Athens’ Exarcheia neighbourhood has been reimagined as a bright, open, home with a distinct personality.
Designed by Italian architect and illustrator @federicascalise__ the renovation pairs soft comfort with smart, practical moves including glass bricks that draw light deep into the plan and platform bedroom with built-in storage, a desk and curtain for privacy. Finished with gentle curves, painted frames and simple DIY touches by the current tenant @_takisdimitriadis , the home is flexible, functional, and full of charm.

The challenge: breathing new life into a student apartment
Construit dans les années 1980 à Athènes, ce petit appartement mansardé de 20 mètres carrés, ouvert sur la colline d’Hélicon, a accueilli trois générations de femmes durant leurs études. Après des décennies d’usage, il avait besoin d’un nouveau souffle : la rénovation visait à redonner vie à cet espace ancien, en le rendant lumineux et confortable, tout en respectant son histoire et un budget modeste.
Built in Athens in the 1980s, this small 20-square-meter attic apartment overlooking Helicon Hill has been home to three generations of women as they carried out their studies. After decades of use, a complete renovation was needed to breathe new life into this well-worn space, making it bright and comfortable, while respecting its history and working within a modest budget.
