Día de Muertos en Mixquic, 2025 as witnessed by me & @_rachel_reyes_ Cempazúchil, terciopelo flowers, catrinas, copal. By late afternoon, the town gathers momentum. Drums carry through the streets as people move toward the cemetery, copal drifting above the crowd. Mixquic remains one of the few places where this tradition continues in a form closely tied to its pre-Hispanic roots, shaped later by syncretism. At dusk, chanting and bells guide families arriving with flowers, food, and tall cirios. Children pass between graves while the pathways tighten. When the candles are lit, the cemetery becomes a field of warm light. Beeswax, smoke, marigold petals, and small gestures configure the atmosphere. This series reflects those hours: dense light, shared ritual, a community sustaining its lineage.
