Watercolor negative painting a book page from Lynnie & Lug
โข
#watercolor tip: Negative painting works by painting in layers, avoiding previously painted areas until you get to the furthest background/darkest tones. Unlike painting each area like a coloring book, negative painting wonโt create harsh edge lines while building cohesive depth in the scene.

Throwback to painting some mushrooms on this big painting I did this year. Someone please give me more plants to paint ๐ฉ
#watercolor tip: I use colored pencils for outlining my drawings before painting. Using multiple colors can add interest; the mushrooms were drawn in a bold pink pencil that bleeds slightly when wetted. I use that color strategically to highlight red hues and create a glow. Colored pencils are a useful way to avoid harsh outlines because they will blend naturally under layers of paint.

๐ฎ๐๐พ๐ ๐ ~> for the โจ๐ช๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ป๐๐ ๐ณ๐๐๐๐โจ cover reveal and release date! Iโm so excited to talk about my latest book project, an atmospheric story about a mother and daughter chasing the northern lights. This was such a dream project to be able to design and paint all winter landscapes. The whole story felt so familiar, being able to draw inspiration from my own winter hikes and time in the north woods. And on the final day of this project, I saw the northern lights in person for the first time right outside my door! It was truly a magical experience.
Read all about the illustration and writing process on the blog from @bookthreader , plus some process images and sneak peeks!

Thank you to author @amandadavis_art and @marblepress_books for trusting me to illustrate this beautiful story, and my wonderful agent @ajadeite at @astoundusagency for guiding me the whole way and providing such incredible support.

Bear page details from ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ฟ๐. I drove myself a little crazy painting that grass. I tend to get excited planning layered elements and then loathe myself when I actually have to paint it. ๐ฅฒ
These animal pages were all planned with a season in mind and this one is spring, featuring the little cubs and river rapids from a winter thaw.

The full wrap jacket cover for ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ฟ๐ This is one of the longest paintings Iโve ever done and when I first attempted it something went wrong with the paper and I had to completely start over ๐ Of course it was on the biggest piece. I made the right choice to start again though because it went much smoother on the second try!

Tyrus Wong study from 2022 ~ swipe to see some of his master work. Tyrus is forever an inspiration and Iโm proud to say I have a small collection of his official prints. He was unbelievably dedicated, humble, creating effortless atmospheric work. Heโs everything I hope to be in my career โฅ๏ธ

Iโve been trying my hand at some collage art to get out of art block. This has been sitting unfinished in a folder for months, but I hate having abandoned work so I decided to just play around during some free time. I found this medium really freeing! Itโs much more playful than the planning needed in watercolor. And finding the source images is half the fun. (I may have downloaded 400+ in the last year ๐)
Why does it feel so vulnerable to post a new medium... ๐ Lmk if youโre interested in seeing more like this!

โ๏ธ๐ฆ โ๏ธ ๐ฆโ๏ธ A little early for the twins but Iโm in a spring mood. This one was inspired by art nouveau stained glass and book covers. I went with the symmetry of butterflies, 4 leaf clovers, and bee hives for faceted Gemini. And the bees represent their buzzing communication in a single mind.

Throwback to one of my first paintings in procreate (2021). It was an experiment to see if I could do negative painting digitally and I think it turned out pretty well. Although Iโve had to go back and lighten every digital piece from 2020-2021. I was painting everything so dark! I guess it was the vibes at the time ๐
Swipe for video. Warning flashing lights ๐จ

Details from Aquarius โ ๐ฆข Did you know swans are associated with the sign? Specifically water birds capable of long-distance flight. I thought that was super fitting. And also salt?? Which is perfect because I used a lot of salt effects in this one. The moss in particular turned out just how I wanted. And ironically I used a lot of sea salt.

Celebrating all 20k of you today! ๐ It sounds cliche but I am honestly so grateful for the community that has grown here. I remember the old days of the internet where it felt like real community and every new connection was exciting. Friendships were born that I still hold today. DeviantArt in partcular was such a supportive place back in the day and reminscing makes me sad because it feels like social media has become transactional instead of communal. The nostalgia for that era has set my goal to cultivate an art community like it was in the beginning. I know so many of you by name, by your art, and countless heartwarming interactions. I truly have that feeling of support and frienshsip again.
Whether you are here for floof cats, Ghibli fanart, illustration, friendship, or just because- thank you so much for giving me every reason to keep creating! ๐ซถ
