This one is dedicated to my late 阿公 / grandpa 🌼 One of my earliest memories is sitting on his lap as a toddler, reaching my grubby hands into his cup of chrysanthemum tea. I was fascinated by its whole flowers. What were they doing in the water? Most importantly, why wouldn’t he eat them? Well, *I* would eat them! And he would let me grab the chrysanthemum bulbs from the tea, which I would then proceed to nibble with great amusement. 😋
I still think of him every time I have chrysanthemum tea, just as I think of my late grandma every time I have ginger date soup. So in a small way, these paintings are remembrances to them.

Do you have a comfort tea? Mine is the medicinal concoction of ginger, red dates, and goji berries drizzled in honey. It’s the perfect immunity and iron boost, but I crave it even when I’m not sick. I make it so sweet, it’s more like a dessert! Who said medicine had to taste bad haha?
Shout out to @mollyantdraws for holding me accountable when I said I wanted to paint a winter tea witch a few months ago ❤️ what’s next, hmm… maybe a soup witch 🧙♀️

@wendyluwrites saw this from beginning to end in way too many minor iterations haha. Thanks for bearing with me as I painstakingly picked this up, sat on it, and then finally laid it to rest today!

I used to pay this little one a hello once a week, back when I lived by Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Without fail, you’d see them holding sentry on the fence by the old mill. I went to see Mittens as much I went to see the waterfall - maybe more, if I’ll be honest.

Dear @cellooo_kat , I’m no good at captions so I’m writing you a letter instead. I finally painted the flowers you arranged for my almost-half-birthday. I hesitate to say “paint” because it could be more rendered, more painterly, etc. I thought about revisiting it today, but hey, it’s #pleinairpril so we’re calling it done, not perfect. Besides, it’s clear to me now that if I don’t choose rest more often, rest will choose itself for me. I’m in my disoriented post-migraine-nap daze, while you are wide awake the next room over, likely crocheting, the night owl that you are. Thank you for dinner and thank you for helping me with dishes when I crashed dead today. Thank you for looking after me extra when I got sick last month. I couldn’t ask for a kinder and more considerate friend and roommate. I’m no good at captions, and I’m writing you a letter instead because, frankly, I wouldn’t be painting as much without your help. I’m not taking you for granted. So I’m setting an intention: Before everything else, I’m going to take care of myself first so I can pull my weight more. And with that said, I’m out. Have you been asked “describe 2023 in one word” yet? I couldn’t answer. This year has been unpredictable, heartbreaking, and beautiful all at once — change after change after change. But a couple things have been consistent: The spark of joy, when I hit that flow state, is miraculously still there. So is the calm of an idle walk. Music. Soup. And most of all, people — thank you so much for being there for me. You know who you are. Through the worst and the best, through periods of quiet and bursts of laughter, this year just wouldn’t be the same. And I wouldn’t be the same without you. ❤️

I don’t plan on actually participating this month though. I’ve been pretty busy, and I won’t lie… I’m pretty content with not posting much haha. Though I can’t say I’ve taken a total break, I’ve slowed down a lot with drawing and painting in general. And I’m okay with that. My wrist is definitely a lot happier lol.
