Excerpt from LEGIONS: “The Hustle Has Its Own Rhythm”
Saturday reminded me why DC is basically one big town. I went over to Haydee’s in Mount Pleasant, and it felt like stepping into a little Salvadoran cantina tucked inside the city. Photos and memorabilia from different eras, portraits of the owners in their younger years — you could tell this community staple has been around forever. If walls could talk.
Even the $20 cover came back as a voucher you could use inside for food or drinks, which gave the place that old-school neighborhood feel.
Warm, loud, tight room, and a full salsa orchestra (ORQUESTA MANPLESA) packed into the corner like they’ve been playing there for years. One of the many bands my friend Maria plays with — she had three shows that day, bouncing between styles back-to-back.
They played Bad Bunny’s salsa track,
BAILE INoLVIDABLE — the whole room lit up.
It’s wild realizing we’re living through the birth of a classic — a song that’s probably going to sit next to the greats forever in heavy rotation.
Watching everyone on stage — switching instruments, calling cues, smiling between solos — actually reminded me of my dad when he used to perform all over the city. Show after show, spot after spot. That hustle is its own rhythm. Same energy, different era.
Musicians and DJs still live on that same grind. Saturdays are a marathon: jump from one gig to the next, switch crowds, switch energy, keep going.
Different era, same hustle.
