The biggest mistake in innovation? Thinking technology alone creates better experiences. It doesn’t. Because people don’t connect to perfection. They connect to feeling. That’s why the strongest products, spaces and brands usually combine two things: 1. machine precision 2. human warmth When everything becomes fully automated, we often lose the imperfections that make something feel real, intentional and alive. And that’s where craftsmanship still matters. Not instead of innovation but alongside it. In this pitstop (episode), we talk about why the future of design is not human or machine but the balance between technology, emotion, tradition and behavior. → If you want to understand how great design actually shapes human experience: watch the full episode. Every object, space or interface you interact with was designed to shape a certain feeling or action. At its core, design has always been about improving human life. From the earliest tools created for survival to the products, spaces and systems we interact with today design shapes how we live, feel and connect. And that’s what many people misunderstand about great design: It’s not decoration. It’s translation. Turning needs, emotions, behavior and ideas into something people can actually experience. And yes, beauty matters too. Because aesthetics are not superficial. They influence emotion, atmosphere and the way we experience everyday life. In this episode, we talk about why design sits at the intersection of function, culture, psychology and human behavior and why truly great design always starts with people. → If you want to understand how design shapes the way we live, think and feel: watch the full episode. Every year in Milan, automotive shows up stronger. And every time, it hits something personal. I started in that world — working with Lexus — knowing I would eventually move toward architecture and design. So watching these two fields slowly converge feels… inevitable. A car was never just about getting from A to B. It’s one of the most present objects in everyday life something people build a relationship with something that carries identity, memory, emotion. this shift is becoming visible here @milan.design.week From tactile, almost sculptural installations by Hyundai to the more conceptual, introspective spaces of Lexus to the precision of Audi. while brands like Škoda open the conversation — more playful, more direct, more accessible. It feels like a shift back to something more coherent, where the car is not just a product, but a fully designed part of how we live. A pleasure to be on the @hyundai talk where the car designers together with @externalreference shared the 70s legacy that yet again inspires people by the same challenges society always repeats ❤️‍🔥 #automotivedesign #interactiveinstallation #mdw2026

Come and visit us at the “Close-Up” exhibition in the charming and picturesque courtyard of the Mangini Bonomi Museum! 🌼☀️ The projects exposed are a photograph that plays with the forms and soul of colours (“Close-Up” by Maurizio Barberis). A glass object that, as a vase, embodies the essence of the universe, a black hole from which a yellow orchid blossoms (“The Black Hole” by Claesson Koivisto Rune with Orrefors), a lamp that represents the Mediterranean sun and pays homage to Japanese culture (“Sigillo”, Carmelo Zappulla / External Reference). A table, a lamp and 3D-printed sculptures made from coffee residuals that explore the essence of form and domestic ritual (“Domestic ritual lamp and table” by Duccio Grassi Architects with Grassi Pietre, Coffefrom, Wasp, MtPlex). Three sculptures representing the three elements of spiritual alchemy. A small golden elephant found in a sculpture of pottery (“Romantic Trap” by Alfonso Femia, Enrico Martino, Danilo Trogu). A deconstructed image of Augustus that prompts deep reflection on our times (“Fragments of Empire” by Armando Bruno and Alberto Torres). A series of photographs on landscape residues printed on cotton recycled paper (“Lichtung” by Maurizio Barberis with Manualis). A sound installation made with bell signals and used for communication in situations of clandestinity and concealment (“HIDING PLACES Catalogue of Codes” by Steve Piccolo). ——————— C L O S E U P S h a p e of t i m e Things as they appear Things as they are Milan Design Week 16 - 25 april Museo Mangini Bonomi via dell’Ambrosiana 20, Milan An exhibition curated by Patrizia Catalano and Maurizio Barberis In collaboration with @5vie_milano @museo.manginibonomi 16 - 19 April, 2.30pm - 7.30pm 20 - 25 April, 11.00am - 7.30pm Works by Armando Bruno and Alberto Torres, Maurizio Barberis, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Alfonso Femia with Danilo Trogu and Enrico Martino, Duccio Grassi, Steve Piccolo, Carmelo Zappulla / External Reference Technical partners Coffeefrom, Grassi Pietre, Manualis, MTPlex, Orrefors, Danilo Trogu, Wasp, Zeus Executive producer @martinabarberis__c

exhibited works. Milan Design Week 2026 S I G I L L O By @carmelo.zappulla / @externalreference Sigillo is a lamp that connects two cultures, Mediterranean and Japanese. It is a luminous sculpture which encapsulates the Mediterranean sun in a crystalline block like a living, silent heart, offering a poetic bridge between cultures. It represents a gift of light, a memory, a shared contemplation. When i Personally start our Dineology Concept i ask myself…. What if a hotel was not a place to stay… …but a place you enter for a feeling you cannot find anywhere else? Too many luxury hotels today are flawless — and completely forgettable. Perfect rooms. Perfect service. But no emotional imprint. With Dineology, we are challenging exactly that. The image behind this post — a construction plan by External Reference — is not about architecture. It is about rethinking how experiences are designed from the ground up. Because the future of ultra-luxury hospitality is not built on rooms. It is built on ecosystems. At Dineology, we don’t create restaurants inside hotels. We create destination experiences that make people come — even if they don’t stay. — Arrival is not check-in. It is the beginning of a story. — Dining is not a menu. It is a curated, multi-sensory journey. — Staff are not employees. They are storytellers and experience guides. — Spaces are not static. They evolve through art, sound, and interaction. — Guests are not customers. They are part of the narrative. The goal is simple: To transform a hotel from a place you visit… into a place you remember, talk about, and return to. Not driven by luxury alone — but by meaning, emotion, and inspiration. That is what we are building. And this is only the beginning. CAAA Lucern Dineology Concept by Pietro Catalano #luxuryhospitality #luxuryhotels #dineology #caaa

The Architect Who Merged Physical and Digital — Carmelo Zappulla An Italian architect based between Barcelona and Dubai, Carmelo Zappulla leads External Reference Architects with a vision that blends architecture, technology, and human experience. His work operates at the intersection of design, art, and computation—where digital tools and physical space are developed together, shaping immersive environments across retail, hospitality, and cultural projects. From AI-driven interiors to experiential public spaces, each project is conceived as a narrative—defined by geometry, material innovation, and interaction. For Zappulla, architecture is not just built form. It’s a system of ideas, technologies, and experiences working as one. 📸 Photo credits: External reference ⚠️ Disclaimer: All photographers are mentioned.
