Hatch/et (2026)
Hatch/et is an apparatus that endlessly brute-forces randomly generated passcodes, and at the moment it succeeds, brings a hatchet down on itself. A computer, manufactured as one fungible unit among many, meets a code that belongs to it alone and is thereby promoted into something irreplaceable. The cost of that promotion is to cut itself down. Individuation and erasure converge on the same instant.

NowHere (New York, NY) presents a group of works by artist-duo exonemo, centered on the concept of randomness: a theme that resonates deeply in a city known for its endless stream of output and input. The installation is a generative work in which a computer attempts to guess a random passcode. The moment it is solved, a mounted hatchet is triggered and released, destroying its computer in one swift motion.

DISCODER (1999 - 2000)
*Restored by ZKM
The browser-based software artwork DISCODER, created in 1999 and 2000 (Installation version) as a browser-based tool for creatively destroying web pages, has been restored with the cooperation of ZKM in Karlsruhe, Germany.
The original modified keyboard has been recreated by ZKM engineers based on records from that time. For the hardware restoration, we decided to leave the entire process in the hands of ZKM’s engineers—after all, once we’re gone, we can’t do it ourselves!
Now on display at

Callback (2022)
Callback is an installation based on the prescient science-fiction Japanese manga “My Name is Shingo” (Watashi wa shingo) by Kazuo Umezu, that he created during the 1980s, before the spread of the Internet or AI.
Created today, approximately forty years after the original, the idea for this work sprang from the artists imagining what it would be like if Shingo’s thoughts had lived on within the network.

On Memory (2023)
It must have been about 15 years ago.
On a stormy day, the cats next door to us were sheltering from the cold as they lay on top of each other, exposed to the wind and rain.
As I looked at these little creatures, feeling each other’s warmth and enjoying the sense of security of being with their friends, it suddenly occurred to me that their feelings at the time, which no one records or documents, must surely be preserved somewhere in the universe.
On Memory is a series that combines materials of different durability: materials as substances, electronic devices as supports, digital data inscribed on blockchains, and human memories. How long will this work, which has taken shape thanks to a miraculous balance of uncertainty, be able to exist? Or will it fade away from our memories in the blink of an eye? Your memory is also a part of the work.

CONNECT THE RANDOM DOTS (2021)
CONNECT THE RANDOM DOTS was inspired by the “connect-the-dots” activities often seen in children’s picture books, where children draw pictures by connecting dots in order. In this book, the positions of the dots are randomly generated by the computer, and even if you connect the lines in order, no meaningful shape is drawn. The result would be the same no matter who drew it. What is the meaning of an act to obtain a random result based on a random origin? I feel that it is in these elusive acts that we can find a perspective on art and the meaning of human existence that is beyond rationality.
We didn’t choose where we were born, when we were born, what we look like, our gender, or even our personality. Sometimes we hate these randomly determined parameters, but often we stick to them and cherish them more than the characteristics we acquire later in life. It can be said that life is about giving meaning to such a randomly determined self.
