Once upon a time, about 20 years ago, my partner and I would create and screen print gig posters out of our kitchen. I’m kind of going back to my roots as a designer, before I went to design school, when Holly Golightly and Jon Spencer would play Horseshoe Tavern and we would eagerly volunteer our services to make posters for no pay. It was when Gary Grimshaw was my hero and Bill Graham’s biography just came out. It was a time when Toronto was still affordable and the local music scene was important.
I want to get back to that. I want to recapture that nostalgia in ways that feel new but familiar.
So here is a gig poster I made for The Kewpie Dolls and The Ape-ettes show happening this Saturday at the Monarch Tavern. Skillfully and beautifully printed by @colourcodeprint because I need my kitchen to be a kitchen these days. A limited number of these babies will be for sale at the show.

The complexity of @constantine_toronto ’s culinary point of view is delicately interwoven into every piece of branding. The commanding wordmark and restaurant name have undeniable Roman influence, while grounded colour tones and a micro tile pattern are inspired by the traditional technique and unique variations of North African clay and earthenware. Copper foil touches and flared serif type deliver a hit of elevated modernity.

You might hear me call every project my favourite, because after putting my heart and soul into everything I design, I really do grow fond of so many of my clients’ brands, but the artwork (we at CRD) created for @preservatorytoastbar might seriously take the cake, or toast, as it were.
Sometimes you have to visualize the big picture before you can make the brand identity make sense, and that’s just what we did here, making a mural of smaller brand vignettes in order to conceive the design for signage, packaging, website and merch.
I’ll admit, I’m a die-hard Ontarian/“East Coast” gal, so it wasn’t easy saying West Coast is the Best Coast. But when you’ve got a gem as valuable as @thepreservatory , making delicious preserves and pairings for sublime toast toppings at the @granvilleisland_publicmarket , you happily become an honorary West Coaster. 🏔️
