We still think about the moment we found them.
A flea market in Japan, the kind of place where old things wait patiently for the right person, and somehow these antique wagashi moulds found us first. We brought a few home, got back into the studio, and spent weeks pressing clay into each hollow, experimenting with glazes and colour until something felt right. What came out are these small ceramic jewellery boxes, each one shaped from a mould that is decades old, carrying hand-carved chrysanthemum, lotus, and matsu in deep red, dusty sage, near black, and creamy white. No two pressings ever come out exactly the same, and that is our favourite part.
