Very cool to see the root nodules on a nitrogen fixing cover crop. Bacteria colonizes these roots nodules and allow the plant to draw nitrogen from the air into the soil. Another documentary that's at the top of our list: Fantastic Fungi. Narrated by American mycologist Paul Stamets (who a few years ago had a Star Trek character named after him), this movie is the most amazing visual and scientific journey into the mysterious world of fungi that you will find anywhere.⁠ ⁠ Why the fascination with fungi? They are the ultimate symbionts of all plants. In other words, most plants have formed mutual relationships with mycorrhizal fungi, where these fungi extend the reach of plants roots much further into the soil, and bring back nutrients in exchange for the sugars plants make through photosynthesis. ⁠ ⁠ Saprophytic fungi are the ultimate decomposers.
