Today would have been my brother Christian’s 47th birthday.
He sadly took his own life this past September, and losing him has brought about a lot of self-reflection. One thing we never missed was reaching out to each other on our birthdays. This small tradition means more to me now than I ever realized it would.
Chris and I were five years apart and truthfully, we didn’t always get along (actually rarely). We were opposites in almost every way. But he was my brother… the only person who truly shared my childhood, our memories, and the life our parents built for us.
We experienced a lot of loss growing up. My family lost our sister Courtney at a young age, and I don’t think Chris ever fully recovered. Then in 2004, we lost our mom unexpectedly. Those losses shaped us both in ways that are hard to put into words.
Grief is a strange and powerful thing. Losing Chris has hit me harder than I ever expected. I find myself wishing we had been closer, wishing I had done more, said more, helped him see just how much his life mattered.
Today, I choose to remember him. I pray he’s finally at peace and that whatever battles he carried are now behind him.

A Study in Warm Minimalism, Set Above Beverly Hills
