Faith & Football - A few words from @evecj.art
My concept for this photoshoot was to produce a series of editorial photographs connecting Religion and Football. This was inspired by growing up in a Catholic family and football being the centre of every conversation between my brothers and my dad. I remember the priest in my local church would pray for Manchester United at the end of every service and read out the scores to everyone there.
The theme of this photoshoot came from the ‘The Old Firm’ (Celtic vs Rangers) and ‘The Geordie Messiah’ (Kevin Keegan) what interested me about connecting these two themes, is how religion has its deep roots into the sport whether its pre-game rituals or the faith behind the supporters.
The fans of football and the Catholic congregation have many overlaps for example you support your local football team just like you would go to your local church. You follow the 10 commandments like people follow the match rules. When researching I realised fans treat their team as its own religion and the home stadium is there place of worship.

When researching into the crossover of Religion and Football, many players and managers are refrenced to religious figures. This photoshoot was inspired by the ex Liverpool and Newcastle player/manager Kevin Keegan ‘The Geordie Messiah’. #newcastle #kevinkeegan #football #fashion #photography #creativedirecting
