Five things which helped us film interviews for the $100k documentary feature
@reachingforlightfilm
1. Moving quickly with minimal gear.
We didn’t get a chance to see most of the locations before shoot days. Focusing on blocking, framing, and shaping existing light became an absolute necessity.
2. Blocking around existing light
We placed Urban Brandstrom next to windows on location and diffused with net curtains. We also controlled and repositioned the existing practicals.
3. Enhancing existing light
We wrapped the window light around the face slightly with an
@amarancreators F22C. There was a dark cabinet opposite the window forming natural negative fill.
4. Staying flexible
We didn’t use a second tripod for interviews shot on location to save time in changing setups. Opting to place the gimbal on a table/chair instead. This freed up more time to figure out blocking, framing, and lighting. Less rushing creates a more relaxed environment which is so important for interviews.
5. Prepping as much as possible
We had the luxury of plenty of prep time with Alex Baker. I opted to use Blender for previs, recreating the workshop as a 3D model. This allowed me to quickly experiment with different camera angles and lighting setups in pre-production to save time on the shoot day. Using Blender in this way also allowed me to schedule the shoot so the sun would hit the wall in the background at the perfect angle.
