In less than two weeks, John Huckert's remarkable thriller HARD makes its return to the big screen for the first time in a quarter century. In celebration, I had the trailer fully remastered in 4k from its original negative A/B rolls, revealing detail and color that was entirely absent from the long out of date standard definition master. This is the first time I've had the amazing opportunity to have something remastered & brought up to spec for modern displays & the results were night and day.
This screening is a labor of love for me, having cost far more than I could ever hope to make back in ticket sales, but I fully believe that this is a movie more people need to see & I am doing my part to make that a reality. Please come out and make John's trip to the Lone Star state a memorable one, as it's unlikely to ever happen again. All attendees to our one-night-only screening on Monday, April 27 will receive a free 18x24 promo poster from the film's original 1999 release, along with an edited, R rated DVD copy, while supplies last! Please purchase your tickets ahead of time & tell your friends!
The wildly underseen serial killer thriller HARD from 1998 is returning to theaters for one night only, April 27 at 9PM. Shot without permits on a shoestring budget raised by maxing out 67 credit cards, HARD is an unflinching and original take on a genre at its prime in the mid 90s. Something of a hit at festivals in its time, HARD is a testament to creativity and ingenuity, primed to find a whole new generation of audiences starting right here at the Texas Theatre projected straight from the original 35mm print.
Director John Huckert will be in attendance to deliver a brief intro and a Q&A afterwards to answer all your burning questions like, "why didn't this get better distribution?" As if that's not enough, the freaks at @texastheatre have paired it with another gritty gay serial killer thriller, William Friedkin's CRUISING (1980) which screens the same day at 6:45 PM.
I'm incredibly proud to announce that my next screening at the historic Texas Theatre is not a repertory pick, but a contemporary indie classic-in-the-making. THE PEE PEE POO POO MAN is a hilarious low budget comedy spin on the thriller, existing somewhere in the space between the digital maximalism of a Connor O'Malley video, a psychedelic reimagining of David Cronenberg's paranoiac drug fugue NAKED LUNCH, and a modern day riff on the TAXI DRIVER formula. Based on true events that occurred in Toronto, ON where it was filmed, THE PEE PEE POO POO MAN is the definitive true crime comedy shitpost motion picture of our lifetime, and I guarantee you'll laugh til your sides hurt!! The film plays ONE NIGHT ONLY this Thursday, January 15 at 9PM. The screening will be followed by a pre-recorded Q&A between myself and director Braden Sitter Sr and there will be free Pee Pee Poo Poo Man pens given out to attendees while supplies last. Don't miss your chance to be part of the zeitgeist, come see THE PEE PEE POO POO MAN this Thursday!
My journey in film programming began in March 2024 when I reached out to Matt Farley over text and asked if I could book a double feature of two of his movies at my local microcinema. This event bloomed into a monthly series and eventually led me to booking Matt & Charlie for a two day, five film retrospective of their work this past January. Their movies are pure labors of love & have fundamentally changed how I appreciate films. The hard work and devotion they bring to their silly productions which are populated with family and friends is endearing & infinitely inspiring and sharing their work with a larger audience has been so rewarding.
I'm thrilled that I'll be screening their latest movie, EVIL PUDDLE this Saturday evening at @spacydtx at 7:45PM. EVIL PUDDLE is a laugh-out-loud tribute to big ensemble disaster films of yore, mixing in their signature small town ennui with a more ambitious production scale & a larger cast of characters than have ever appeared in one of their backyard movies. I'm sure those of you who made it out to one of my previous Motern screenings are fully aware of the unassuming genius hiding in these low budget endeavors, but I sincerely hope a few fresh faces might see this one and think "why not give it a try?" In a world where blockbuster entertainment grows more and more soulless and homogenous, it's more important than ever to support independent filmmakers who color outside of the expected boundaries. Following the screening we'll be chatting with director Charles Roxburgh and star Matt Farley over Zoom!
Just swinging thru to announce an official save the date for my birthday screening this year! On Tuesday, July 1 I am beyond excited to present a double feature from my favorite director, Tsui Hark, and my number one action hunk, the muscles from Brussels, Jean Claude Van Damme. We're kicking the night off upstairs with a 35mm film print of the incredible JCVD/Rob Schneider buddy flick KNOCK OFF, one of my favorite action movies of all time, a film that seeks to re-imagine the very grammar of action cinema, a totally over-the-top masterpiece of raw kinetic energy that will melt your minds or your money back guaranteed. Following that we'll be watching 1997's DOUBLE TEAM starring JCVD alongside basketballer Dennis Rodman and Mickey Rourke in a FREE screening downstairs via a DCP presented by the lovely folks at @tuesday_night_trash . I remain in awe that I've managed to parlay my love for genre films into this stab at actual programming, and I appreciate all the support and encouragement I've received along the way. I've had so many magical experiences watching 35mm prints upstairs at the Texas Theatre and it makes me so excited to know that I'm absolutely going to be showing at least one of you unsuspecting folks your new favorite movie with a lovingly raucous audience <3 Ticket link for Knock Off will be shared when it's up !
Dogposting as subterfuge to inform you that THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 @spacydtx I’ll be presenting THE JAR - a 1984 independent art horror film shot in Colorado that was unfortunately butchered upon its initial release. The original VHS copies had almost half of the frame cut out and all of the gorgeously colored gel lighting ala Argento/Bava was washed out and murky, and the bungled presentation of his hard work led director Bruce Toscano to abandon filmmaking for decades until it was lovingly restored in gorgeous widescreen by @_terror_vision_ . It’s a deliberately paced film that follows the logic of an unending nightmare and a slow descent into hell, a nocturnal transmission full of creeping dread and pulsing synths, finally being reappraised as the cult classic it is by audiences like you! This screening will be the Texas premiere of the Terror Vision restoration and will be followed by a virtual Q&A with director Bruce Toscano and writer George Bradley. Ticket link in bio. Swipe to the end for a full upcoming Evan Gordon presents calendar.
I couldn’t be more excited for my very timely conversation this Saturday evening with journalist @iddeefixe at @spacydtx . I’m sure we’ll (excuse the pun) graze the surface of current events, but the true reason for the season is to share an underseen gem of a pure-blooded amerikkkan conspiracy thriller and have one of the preeminent experts on the freak beat share the shocking Cold War backstory that inspired the film. We won’t be telling the title til showtime, but rest assured it holds a special place for both Rob and me.
Spent a little time in New York City with my love. Caught my favorite jpop artist, Akiko Yano’s jazz trio, ate a lot of good food, found the tunnel from William Friedkin’s Cruising, and lastly caught the @shrapknel album release show for Nobody Planning to Leave with a room absolutely brimming with of some the best emcees rapping now. It was my favorite trip to the city yet and a nice way to round out my 31st year.
My next Spacy screening, 1983’s DEEP IN THE HEART should be mandatory viewing for anyone who lives in North Texas. The city of Dallas has never been captured so authentically on film - everything from the state fair to backyard bbqs to actual footage from Skyline High School sets a uniquely Texas Gothic scene for a scathing & rather feminist critique of amerikkkan “culture” - and I’m incredibly proud to be giving it a proper homecoming event. Following the screening I’ll be giving a brief locations tour (previewed here) alongside film writer @hexmassacre who will be trekking up from Austin to discuss the film’s history, its uniquely Texan nature, its relation to the revenge genre, and maybe some other feminist texts from the era (and selling some of the last few copies of her hit book The Sweetest Taboo). Come out this Saturday, June 8 ‘n say Howdy folks, this one’s got my personal guarantee to be a five-alarm barn burner of an evening. Tickets available in @spacydtx bio.

REFLECTIONS OF EVIL, Damon Packard’s 2002 trash-art odyssey straight into the pitch-black heart of Los Angeles makes its Dallas theatrical debut this Saturday at @spacydtx . Reflections is an incredibly important cultural artifact, an angry transmission from the End of History that would only find stylistic counterparts a decade later with the emergence of shows like Check it Out, Tim & Eric, and The Eric Andre Show. It’s an anti-commercial exploration of cultural rot and ideological detritus at the turn of the 21st century and I promise you’ve never seen anything quite like it.
Following the screening I’ll also be hosting a virtual Q&A with the film’s creator Damon Packard. This movie gets shown once every couple years at some arthouse out in LA or NYC, but this is a very rare chance for us no-coasters to see a genuinely subversive and inspired piece of anarchic and un-copyrightable art theatrically. Don’t miss out! Tickets available at spacydtx.com
The rumors are true folks!! The fine folks at @spacydtx & I are happy to present a double feature from one of the most inspiring American independent filmmaking groups working today, @moternmedia ! I think these two films function as a great entry into the 17-deep filmography that Matt & Charles have amassed over two decades, and I’m very excited to share them with a (hopefully) full house! I’ve got a lot more to say in the coming weeks, but tickets will soon be available on spacy’s website!
Cordially inviting all you ghouls and goblins to a good old fashioned horror show. I’ll be playing 8 films, mostly produced from the 60s thru the 90s - gothic goodness, creature features, and Lovecraftian terrors from all over the world beginning 4:20PM on Friday, October 13 year of our unholy lord 2023. Flyer pulled from my brain and lovingly assembled by @ardentlychaotic . Veterans of my last marathon might recognize this image from Rinse Dream’s incredible DR. CALIGARI (1989).
