Watch Samer Abdelnour, a Senior Lecturer from the UoE Business School, break down Francesca Albanese’s UN Special Report and Edinburgh University’s complicity on Al Jazeera.
The report centres around the Economies of Occupation and Genocide, described by Samer as a ‘constellation of actors […] whose operations, products and services either directly enact, enable or underpin violence, or are somehow indirectly related to this violence’.
When asked to assess the University of Edinburgh’s complicity, Samer gives a brief overview of the University’s specific financial holdings (more information on this in our linktree), and states it is ‘unfortunate the the University’s Senior Leadership have ignored the thousands of students and hundreds of faculty and staff who […] have presented information that shows, beyond reasonable doubt, that the University has failed in its own due diligence obligations to prevent holdings in companies that are involved in human rights violations’
Edinburgh is continuing to make the news for their complicity and financial entanglement. It is not just students who are working for divestment - academics, like Samer, are also being ignored by the University in favour of stalling the inevitable divestment.
Edinburgh University continues to make headlines for their financial complicity in the genocide of Palestinians, the mass protests against administration during graduations, and their refusal to divest and acknowledge their colonial legacy.
Following the publishing of the University’s Race Review - an academically-led analysis of the institution’s historical ties to slavery and settler-colonialism - Edinburgh is now considering unadopting the IHRA definition of antisemitism, which conflates criticism of ‘israel’ with genuine antisemitism.
The colonial legacy of Arthur Balfour, former Chancellor of UoE and author of the Balfour Declaration, is particularly scrutinised in the report.
Edinburgh is no longer able to fund genocide away from the mass scrutiny of the public. They are in the spotlight, and will continue to accrue criticism and bad press if they don’t act now. Management are sacrificing the reputation of Edinburgh to continue stalling divestment.
The pressure is working. We must keep pushing. Divestment is inevitable.
‼️EDINBURGH STUDENTS WALK OUT OF THEIR FINAL GRADUATION CEREMONY‼️
Graduates from the School of History, Classics and Archaeology confronted Peter Mathieson during his final speech in protest of the University’s £75,000,000 investment in ‘israeli’ genocide.
This marks the 19th walkout of the graduation season, with only a few ceremonies NOT seeing walkouts.
The message is clear: Edinburgh’s leadership has lost their student body, and by continuing to stall the inevitable divestment, they weaken their reputation among both students and the general public.
DISCLOSE. DIVEST. WE WILL NOT STOP. WE WILL NOT REST!
‼️18TH WALKOUT OF THIS GRADUATION SEASON ‼️
Edinburgh students from the school of History, Classics, and Archeology have carried out the 18th walkout from this year’s graduation ceremonies. This comes as UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese calls out the University of Edinburgh for its “financial entanglement” with Israel’s genocide in Gaza and its research ties directly linking it to assaults on Palestinians.
Students are ashamed to graduate from an institution with such blatantly unethical financial and research ties. We will not stop or rest until we have achieved divestment.
History will not look kindly upon those who stayed silent while genocide was ongoing 🇵🇸
‼️ EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY PRINCIPAL DOWNPLAYS GENOCIDE; STUDENTS CONTINUE DISRUPTIONS ‼️
Alongside staging walkouts, graduates of Edinburgh College of Art disrupted their graduation ceremony with banners to display solidarity with Palestine and show their disgust at the university’s continued support of the Zionist entity.
Vice chancellor Peter Mathieson made a speech in which he shamelessly downplayed the genocide in which he is complicit. The UN acknowledges that Mathieson’s ‘issue’ is a genocide, and acknowledges the complicity of this institution.
THE STUDENTS WILL NOT BE SILENCED 🇵🇸
‼️BREAKING‼️
EDINBURGH VICE CHANCELLOR PETER MATHIESON DIRECTLY CONFRONTED BY STUDENTS AT THE EDINBURGH COLLEGE OF ART (ECA) AFTERNOON CEREMONY IN THE 17TH WALKOUT THIS SUMMER
Peter Mathieson and Colm Harmon have been the primary proponents of the notion that support for divestment and Palestinian liberation exists only amongst a fringe minority amongst the student body. The truth could not be further from the truth, or closer to his face.
Students yet again demonstrate what “we will not stop, we will not rest” really means.
DIVEST NOW MATHIESON.
FREE PALESTINE.
‼️BREAKING‼️
GRADUATES OF THE EDINBURGH COLLEGE OF ART (ECA) WALKOUT EN MASSE AS OUTRAGE CONTINUES TO GROW AT UOE’S FINANCIAL COMPLICITY IN THE GAZA GENOCIDE
This is the 16th walkout this summer that students have conducted in protest of UOE’s direct ties to Israel’s genocide in Gaza and in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
The numbers speak for themselves. The outrage is palpable. The administration cannot - and will not be - allowed to hide their complicity behind the hard earned achievements of the students.
DIVEST NOW.
ACCOUNTABILITY NOW.
WE WILL NOT STOP, WE WILL NOT REST. 🎓🔥🇵🇸
YET MORE GRADUATION PROTESTS FROM EDINBURGH ‼️
Edinburgh University’s Biology graduates took the opportunity to demand immediate divestment, despite pleading emails from senior management to stop the disruptions.
The student body will NOT BE SILENCED. Admin has LOST THEIR SUPPORT; it is only a matter of time until they are FORCED TO DIVEST their £75,000,000 funding the massacring, ethnic cleansing and forced starvation of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.
THIS ADMINISTRATION WILL NEVER BE FORGIVEN FOR WHAT THEY HAVE FUNDED‼️
EDINBURGH GEOSCIENCES STUDENTS HAVE, FOR THE 15TH TIME THIS SUMMER, CONDUCTED A WALKOUT IN PROTEST AND CONDEMNATION OF UOE’s CONTINUED FINANCIAL COMPLICITY IN GENOCIDE.
WE WILL NOT STOP WE WILL NOT REST 🎓🇵🇸🔥
DESPITE MANAGEMENT’S PLEA FOR PEACE, THE WALKOUTS CONTINUE AT EDINBURGH UNIVERSITY‼️
In a show of desperation, senior administration have sent out an email assuring graduates of their efforts to stop the walkouts. In reality, the disruptions have garnered widespread support, and are showing no signs of stopping.
The University of Edinburgh invests over £75,000,000 in israeli genocide. The student body will NOT tolerate their tuition fees being used to fund war crimes.
THE STUDENT INTIFADA WILL NOT BE SILENCED
DIVESTMENT IS INEVITABLE 🇵🇸
